Head Studs: At What Point?

I just got finished reading an article in a very popular diesel magazine.

It stated on Cummins motors, aftermarket head studs should be installed at 450 HP and/or 45 PSI.

Just seems like a low HP number, to require new studs.

Any info, input, or suggestions?

yeh thats definately low there,i would say when you reach the point of after market turbo's that push 50+psi, and twins that push 60 70 psi.but its always good insurance, and ive seen people blow there head gasket with less psi then i was stating just now.

Thats about right on a 24v and 12v, but the MLS gasket on the CR is much better. Personally, some might argue once I start to see 55psi or 550hp Id want them IMO, but some people think stock bolts can go a lot higher. For 400 bucks I think its great insurance.

Any time you have the head off. It is a good $$$ investment. Until then I would leave them until you have to pull her apart.

So far mine are holding up to 585hp+...bolts have never been touched.

I have my gate set at 47 psi...seen 53psi once or twice...but like to stay below 50psi.

I'm a big fan of just Oringing and using stock bolts, with o'rings the head gasket will hold far better then studs and no o'rings.Your trying to hold the gasket and the oring bites in to it were as studs just add a little more clamp pressure .

Drive pressure and heat will kill a HG as fast as boost and HP will.

Going by other peoples advice, the general concensus seems to be that:

A Single charger #2 only, 50-60 PSIG @1:1

Twins #2 only, 55-60 PSIG 1:1 or better

Adding N2O......?

X2

In the many I have lost over the years and the ones I have seen last DP and heat were the common denominators. Both DP and temps will increase timing beyond what a hg can hold.
I seen a CR motor do just shy of 700 and no problems but DP and temps were kept at bay and on the other end of the scale I lost a HG in a 12v that was under 350hp (18* timing and stock hx35 45psi @1600*)
