Got the VGT today

Well I picked up my 6.7, VGT turbo tonight. WOW, the exhaust housing is huge on these things. I can see why they are a 32cm when the collar is fully opened.

Think I'll see if I can bolt this thing on and play with the electronics to make it all work. I really like the idea of having an exhaust brake and the spool up of a 3cm houseing and the breathablity of a 32cm. Time will tell. May end up tossing it in the end, but at least it gets me back under the hood of the truck for a while.

So after some mild disecting today(didn't have alot of time between the 2 kids and work).............

There are 4 wires that control the collar. 1 is obviously a 12v wire that powers the little motor to turn the gear, that rotates a lever, that moves the collar back and forth.

Wire 2 is possibly a ground.

Wire 3 and 4 are communications. I am going to try and put several variations of 1-5v to these and see if I can get the collar to move.

I havn't even opened the electronics case yet to see which wires go were. Seems I have misplaced my T25 security bit. A hardware store run tommorrow and maybe I will have some real answers.

X3!!!

I'd love the larger turbo and exhaust brake! plus it's cheaper than small aftermarket turbos

How do you plan to control it.

I'll know how to control it after finding out what kind of voltage it reads to adjust the collar.
First plan of attack is to get in contact with my friend that does some work on the VW diesels. He has found some info. on building your own electronics to run things. This would be ideal, especially if you could just put the exhaust brake on a switch.

I have also given thought to doing away with the electronics and using just a simple boost actuator off a stock turbo. Don't know if I want it to adjust off of boost or back pressure, though. This way also gives some trouble to the whole exhaust brake thing, too. Seeing as when there is no back pressure or boost the exhaust brake would be working. That's every time you let off the pedal or cruise down a hill. Not really what I'm looking for. While this is probably the easiest way, it's not going to be as user friendly as the electronics.

After taking the cover off, things look very complicated inside the thinking part of the VGT. It even has its' own passage for coolant to run close to the circut board and keep things from burning up. I did find my security bit for disassembly. It's a T20, not a T25.

I won't have much time to tinker this weekend and next week looks busy as all get out. I'll have plenty of time to think before any more progress can be made. Will keep you all posted on any findings.

Im kind of suprised none of the diesel electronic manufacturers have tried making a box to control it for use on earlier trucks.
Maybe its just too much work?
I would think it would be pretty profitable if you could make something that would work, tons of people would upgrade if not for a little more air and the exhaust brake.

I think you'll find that the issue is controlling it fast enough to keep it alive. A little slow on the controlls will over-spool that turbo in a second. But if someone can make it work I'd switch in a second.
