Good single

Mornin, DTR...

I have hopes for twins, but the are just too much $$$ for now...

I'd like to find a good single that I can run now, but use it in twins later.

I don't want to use the stocker in a compound setup.

I'm thinking about an Aroura 3k, and add a 5k later, but I'm open to suggestion/comments... (duh, that's why I posted, right?)

TIA!!!

the Silver Bullet is comparable to the Aroura 5K but, that's a big turbo to add in as a twin.

You'd be very surprised at how well a 66 will work on the street and track as a single. I know someone selling a 66 for $1500 if you're interested. He says it has 1500 miles on it. I know him and know you'd have no worries buying from him. He's in GA

What kind of horsepower are you looking to end up with once you're done modding? Do you tow? What kind of elevation are you living at?

I'm running an HTT 62/71/13SS over an S400 with a 74mm wheel. My setup has me around 700hp with pretty close to stock spoolup. For even faster spoolup at the sacrifice of overall hp, you could go with a 62/65/13. If you don't tow or don't live at a high elevation, you could run a bigger wheel on the bottom turbo. If you're looking for higher overall hp and don't mind a bit more lag, try a 64/71/13. Several people on this forum have similar combos. Do a few searches and see what people think of these setups.

Once you've kinda done your own homework, give Nathan at MPI a call and see what he suggests. That way, when he starts throwing turbo sizes around to ya, you'll be familiar with what he's talking about.

Ty, I'll think about it... I need to do some shopping, and I'm about to drop about 500 of my dough in my ol's new truck... lemme get back at ya.... Would that be a bolt on, or would there be other money involved?

Jared, I do not have a definate HP goal in mind, however see my sig, that's the direction that I'm heading. I want a dependable DD, with some butt. I do not tow that often, I have a 10k flatbed that I pull around from time to time, maybe 1-2 times a month. I'm in South Carolina, so sea level.

Reason I ask about ATS is... I get a pretty good deal there. I know that is a bad word... but they do me pretty good.

Thanks for the responses... keep them coming!

You would like the A3k...go for it.

Or even the 4k cause you are low in elevation.

Don't bother with the NOS...you have water. Flux 2's and a A3 or 4k and your electronics would make a nice jump.

The HTT 62-71-13 ss would make a great single and an awesome turbo in a set of twins. Don't have much experience with the A3k or 4k or 5k for that matter, but I know enough ppl who use them to tell you that you would be happy with it.

I have a Silver 62/71/14.
It was purty expensive, and its a little to laggy for my taste. I'm gunna sell it and get the equivalant with a 65 turbine as the secondary when i get twins.
but it is a very good top end turbo. Once you get it lit, all the boost comes in in less than a second. And it was more overall HP than i expected. I would recommend one, just get it used so as not to pay retail.

I have no first hand experience with the 3k but they seem to be pretty good lil turbos.

And just something to think about. I dont know what your ultimate goal is in hp but the 3k/5k set up is kinda small for big power, you may want to think about an S400 for your bottom when you go twins.

S400 is from BorgWarner, but alot of people make variants. BD's compound setup uses the s400 on the bottom. I plan on using a smaller one as my primary, like a 71 or 76mm compressor, but the bigger ones are 80mm.

Funny how I showed you this site, but you know more than me... Not like you didn't used to work on gigantic turbochargers anyway...

don't feel bad, we all have our strong points. I have mechanic'ed all my life with my stepdad, and the jet engines were just icing on the cake....... but I can't take a civilian fatbody and turn him into a smartly trained recruit.

EDIT: BTW thanks again for showing me the site. Propably saved me thousands in mistakes and useless mods.

Hey Mad,

Lots o' quality stuff out there. Your HP goal will really be the determining factor in the best choice. The ATS setup (A3k-A5k), like said before, is a limiter on higher HP... just like BD towing twins (or anyone's towing twins)... If you want 600 or below, go that route. If you want higher, then a real k31 or s400 is in order. (A5k is a dressed down k31 as Nathan corrected me not long ago). For higher HP trucks, man, you just can't beat that 13ss EH that HTT has with the dual waste gates. But they are "spendier" than you are looking at now. The secondary will be more critical and more expensive to the overall cost (compared to the primary which can be CHEAP in comparison, like $500-600 for a basic s400; upwards of $1500-1800 on the secondary)... but also by far the more critical component to success in a twins buildup.

Advice #1... better to spend a little more now on the right secondary (if you can, I know how budgets are) than suffer later with poorly matched turbos for twins.

Advice #2... call Nathan or Rip for some more knowledgeable input to your choice that won't cost you $$$ or performance down the line!
