Goerend convertor... WOW!

That's the only drivtrain mod I have and with the mild box I have, I followed Dave's recommendation and kept the stock VB. Nothing as slipped so far.
Best mod for a stock/mildly Bomb'd truck, IMHO.

I originally didn't plan on adding a box, I just wanted to get rid of the sloppy TC.
I talked to Dave who suggested the single disk would be fine.
Well, I got bit by the bug and bought a Quad a few months after I had the TC installed.
I called Dave and asked about a VB since I have more power now.
He said that the '05s run higher line pressure from the factory (vs '03-'04.5) and because of the new ECM controlled servo that replaces the throttle cable I don't think people know excatly how line pressure is adjusted vs throttle postion/engine load and so forth anymore.
An upgraded VB would increse the line pressure across the board.
Dave told me the #s, dont quote me on this, I beleive he said about 30% over stock
Since he doesn't like to change things unnecessarily and for my application (60hp over stock, 100hp everyonce in a while, no towing, sledpulling, racing,...), he suggested I stayed with the stock VB. So far so good.
I also asked him if the stall would increase with the extra power/trq, he said maybe 100rpm or so. It does seem a bit higher by about 100-200 or so at WOT on the 100hp setting.
I believe that if I had told him I was gonna be towing he would have recommended upgrading the VB. For what I do with the truck, clutches in the tranny don't slip, it's the rear tires that do

Now I'd like to give some observations. I just went out and drove about 30 miles, highway and city driving.
Here are what I've noticed. Upon startup, immediately I can tell the Cummins exhaust note is different. Hard to explain.... but seems more authoratative. A little louder and definately better. As soon as you touch the throttle, you move instantly. Hard to describe if you've never felt it like this on your truck. I had to check this a bunch of times to make sure I wasn't imagining it, but egt's are slightly up while sitting at a light, foot on the brake in drive. Also, when giving the throttle a good mashing, the shifts are very strong but not harsh. And when second gear comes in, the back end tryed to come around...
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this all has to do with the lower stall and efficiency of Goerend's convertor. I am 100% satisfied with the end results of my trans mods, and I have to say, this by far is the best modification, in my opinion, you can do to your truck. It is a totally different animal now and the money I've spent is well worth the results I've had so far. I can just guess, that around town, if I drive with some sanity, that my mileage should improve somewhat.... and that is the icing on the cake.

I know exactly how you feel. AS some may or may not know by now I came over from a PSD. And @ 38K stock tranny blew up on my modded 7.3. So, I had Brians Truck Shop (BTS) do his "pixie dust magic" on it....full rebuild, pump, valve body, and his converter. MAN OH MAN!!! After ANYONE drives a stock auto tranny where the truck has been bombed, and THEN drive the same truck with a built tranny and a good converter, NO COMPARISON!!!!!! It SHOULD be the first thing anyone does when they have an auto if they plan on bombing there trucks. Congrats on your new
Does the stock 05 valve pump fluid all the time when the truck is running? The 06 allows the TC to lock up in 2nd but the 05 doesn't. A modified valve body will do both and will keep the tranny cool. Do you have a tranny temp gauge to keep an eye on things. Mine runs about 25 degrees cooler with the modded valve body and dd pan ks
the 05 valve body of daves pumps fluid in park thru the lube circuit via a .060 hole. I can also lock up the converter in first. I am using a relay set up to lock up using a momentary switch and unlock with the brake.
