Goerend convertor... WOW!

Well, if you read my other thread about my trans mod problems. All is well now.

Now I'd like to give some observations. I just went out and drove about 30 miles, highway and city driving.
Here are what I've noticed. Upon startup, immediately I can tell the Cummins exhaust note is different. Hard to explain.... but seems more authoratative. A little louder and definately better. As soon as you touch the throttle, you move instantly. Hard to describe if you've never felt it like this on your truck. I had to check this a bunch of times to make sure I wasn't imagining it, but egt's are slightly up while sitting at a light, foot on the brake in drive. Also, when giving the throttle a good mashing, the shifts are very strong but not harsh. And when second gear comes in, the back end tryed to come around...
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this all has to do with the lower stall and efficiency of Goerend's convertor. I am 100% satisfied with the end results of my trans mods, and I have to say, this by far is the best modification, in my opinion, you can do to your truck. It is a totally different animal now and the money I've spent is well worth the results I've had so far. I can just guess, that around town, if I drive with some sanity, that my mileage should improve somewhat.... and that is the icing on the cake.

Yep. When put in gear, the tighter convertor loads the engine more. That is why the EGTs are a bit higher sitting still with it in gear. My EGTs won't come down to 300* before shutdown, unless I put it in neutral.
Have over 20k miles on my tranny. VERY happy with it. Still prefer a handshaker, but it'll do.

I went with Goerend's torque converter, billet input shaft, billet shift lever. Also went with an ATS billet flexplate. My tranny builder modified my valve body the way he normally does in a performance application. He also installed a stronger band clamp(?) and kolene steel plates along with blue clutches which he said were overkill... which is exactly what I wanted.

trik396, very good and accurate observations in my experience as well. The truck is a different animal, right? It actually wants to go now, and will grunt along at a somewhat lower RPM but pull like......... If (when) you upgrade your turbo, you will notice a little less bottom-end until boost builds. A 'little' more smoke too.

Yes, your mileage will improve some as did mine.

I did the 1-2 spinout already across a busy intersection that I had to clear as it turned red. I gladly applied some throttle to let those poor folks go. If someone had been in the right lane I would have taken them out!!

Now, go out and try full-throttle at about 50mph and see what happens....

Chris

Thats good to hear that you got your bugs worked out and are happy with your converter. I think I'm going to go with either a Goerend or DTT converter and valvebody after I get my fuel leak fixed...and KDP. If you don't mind me asking how much was your converter?

My complete tranny and triple disc convertor was less than $3k. Not counting the install cost and taxes.

Mine including install was around 3900.

And worth every penny.

And another benefit I just noticed today... At 70mph the truck is smooth as silk. And this is where I used to have a mild "drone".

Just the billet input shaft. As long as I don't sled pull, I shouldn't need intermediate or output billets. At least that is what I was told.

I luuv my Goerend TC too A whole lot tighter than the stock unit.
That's the only drivtrain mod I have and with the mild box I have, I followed Dave's recommendation and kept the stock VB. Nothing as slipped so far.
Best mod for a stock/mildly Bomb'd truck, IMHO.
