Gear Splitter

Anyone running a GearVendors gear splitter on their 6-speed?

I know they are pricy (which doesnt matter), I was wondering how well it performs and if you find it reliable?

I have a co-worker in the hotshot biz that has one on his dodge and its been nothing but problems and he says the gains are not nearly worth the problems and cost. Its not so much of a issue with a 2 wheel drive but you seriously have to alter alot on a 4wheel drive. You have to lengthen the front drive shaft, shorten the rear shaft which isn't the biggy, its the removing the transfer case, installing the splitter and having to fab new supports for the T-case.

Also it will total void the warranty on the engine and total drivetrain.

From what I've read the U.S. Gear under or over drive unit is more robust unit. A shorter rear drive shaft is a very good thing. On mine I'd immediately go to a one piece drive shaft. The front shaft would be replaced with an aftermarket one with decent sized ujoints instead of the toy ones on the stock shaft. ks

I have a Gear venders on my six speed and you do not have to make the front drive shaft longer as was previously said ( He is confusing the Gear vendors with the US gear) I installed it myself. I like the unit it gives you 10 usable speeds ahead (does not work below about 20mph.). You do have to shorten the rear drive shaft. On a 4x4 it attatches to the transfer case so you do not have to shorten the rear drive shaft. You do have to wire it up so that it does not work when the truck is in a 4x4 mode. ( it would not work well if the front axle was going 5 mph and the back axle was going 7 or 8 mph. If you think about it you don't really need overdrive in 4 wheel drive any way. The Gear venders has a cone clutch and it is not real good and holding back so I wired my exhaust brake up to the open circuit side of a small relay so that if you are in OD the Exhaust brake will not work. The only thing that I do not like about the Gear vendors is that the oil change period is to short for a transmission. They do cost a lot of money and the rate of recovering your costs are a longways down the road, but it makes the unit a lot more fun to drive when you are towing on hills. ( you can split shift and take half of a gear.) When you are not towing and are on a freeway at 120kph or 75mph it is turning 1700rpm instead of 2250+.
Your question is it worth the money I don't know for you but mine is to me. I would suggest that you go to thier web site, and they also have a toll free number to their technical dept.

I have a US Gear on mine had no problems at all with it, work in 4WD 2WD any way you want it. I don't think that from an installation point or functionality wise it is diferent for the 3rd gens. I got mine because of the 4.10 gears I had and at highway speeds 70+ the engine was screaming at almost 2800 rpm. Now I cruise at 72 with about 2000.

PS I did not have any warranty issues, actualy it was installed by my dealer.

I have a 06 with a g56 and I can't stand the high RPS at 75-80 and at those speeds the mpg is horable. I don't need a gear venders or us gear for the splitting of gears I just wan't the extra overdrive, I heard it drops RPMS by 500.

I think this would greatly improve MPG. And I could start driving the speed limit again!!!!!!!!! What kind of gains have you seen??? What kind of prices for unit

I wouldn't even mind changing the gears in the rearends but their seems to be no options yet.

Those were the exact reasons why I had mine installed. Having 4.10s there were two options the splitter or changing gears. I went with the splitter for the overdrive alone , but also becaus it is "reversible" I mean if I ever bought a large boat to tow just push a button and back to 4.10s. Now if I do not stand on the gas pedal I can get 19 mpg cruising at 72+. If i'd put bigger tires on it it would be even higher. The US Gear is about $2500, the installation is not two complicated if you have the means. I had mine installed by my dealer. Solved any potential warranty isssues too. The drive shafts had to be changed, shorter in the back longer in the front. Another $2500 later I was driving it. The fuel savings will not pay for the costs, especially if you pay for the installation like I did. But being able to drive without the engine screaming: "priceless"

BTW changing gears is not much ceaper and does not have the option to swithch back with a button.

I have a gear vendors ... 06 6 speed 3.73's ditto on the oil change, but it does not hold much and 10,000 miles ain't all that ofter ... every other oil change. BFD

5th OD is fantastic for 45-55 mph and for towing.

6th OD is fantastic! Empty I get 4 mpg extra maybe more on the flats. Computer went from 16-17 to 20-21.5 depending on where i am .. flats or hills.

I find I drive more by RPM now. It so easy to find a gear to keep it at 1300 to 1650 on the flats.

Being on the highway going 70 - 80 w/o the motor screaming "Priceless"

I am concerned about longevity and strength. But if you can drag race with 1200 HP and not shear the Ujoint I guess you have to try to break it.
