Flat Bed for Short Bed Truck
Flat Bed for Short Bed Truck
I made the mistake of getting a short bed truck. Now I want to put in an Aux. fuel tank & do not want to give up my tool box. I'm thinking about building a custom flatbed. One that will be 7' long and on one side have a 1' wide by 1' tall & 7' long toolbox & the other side have a 1' wide by 1' tall & 7' long fuel tank (52 gallons). the fuel tank & toolbox would have flat sides & have stake pockets so that I can put in a taller bed when needed. This will leave me with a bed that is 7' long and 5' wide.
Does this seem like a good idea? I know I'm working real hard to get around the fact that I have a SB truck, but don't want to get rid of the truck.
If it get's too expensive I'll do it myself. I don't know how to weld, but am pretty handy otherwise & will learn.

Check out the bed on my '03 in my gallery, 80" wide and long, remember you can recess the boxes and the tank down into the bed, i.e. cut out the crossmembers, make it out of at least 11 guage, you shouldnt have a problem, just make sure the hitch will be separate from the tank to prevent flexing and leaks, or put it between the rails, on my '06 i recessed the aux fuel tank 8" into the bed floor between the crossmembers, and my side boxes are 3" down into the bed floor, but there is a way to do it, i've built 2 now and i enjoy trying different ways of making stuff fit on the back of a truck, i'll look at mine today and ponder this a little and maybe come up with some measurements for you...
