FASS or Air Dog?
FASS or Air Dog?
After my clutch goes in in a week or so, A fuel system upgrade is in the works. I think I have narrowed it down to the FASS or Air Dog. I would appreciate comments on both, best prices found, and also how they do in cold weather starts. Plus if any increased power was noticed. Thanks again!
We have a guy in Fairbanks and another in Tok running the FASS. Both are in the interior and see extended stretches of sub 0 temps with several months at -20 to -40. Neither run a fuel heater and neither have had a problem. Obviously the FASS doesn't mind the cold temps. Since the Air Dog uses the same electric pump, I would suspect the temps wouldn't affect it either. I was worried about gelling and ice crystals plugging my system when I went down to a 3-micron filter so I put a Racor Nomad heater just before my FASS for peace of mind. Cheap insurance. Well not exactly cheap. Racor stuff has gotten expensive over the last two years.
Rip Rook had the best prices on the FASS that I found. http://www.protintnw.com/sa-main.htm

Have you checked out the RASP. Rumor is they are working out the final details for the 3rd gen trucks

Yep. I helped install a RASP on a 2nd Gen about a month ago. That is definitely the way to go if they can get it to clear the fan on the 3rd Gen and keep the price competitive. That is an awesome setup. User "J Double" has some pics in his gallery.
I have the FASS

OT OF HERE it may be the large number of folks that appear to be unhappy with the quick disconnect fitting at the tank, and feel it's sucking air. Maybe that's the noise.
To be honest, I think FASS is a bit of marketing genius. Basically it's an overpriced pusher pump with a filter. The so called air separation and water separating portion of the setup is in my opinion marketing. When I emailed their tech guy and asked about its actual water separating abilities, specifically asking if it would remove emulsified/suspended water under 100ppm, he said no. Most diesel has less than 100ppm water/gal, and the stock water separator will remove slugs of free water (larger than 100ppm of course). Therefore you're paying all that extra money for 'air separation' . Cute concept, whether or not it works is another story. I'd love to see a stock truck dynoed, then one with a pusher pump equalling fass' fuel pressure, then with fass, and see if it's any different than the truck with pusher pump and no air separation..

Thanks for all the input. I ordered a FASS today and should be installed next week. Oredered from your contact in Oregon, AK RAM. Was going to put my Southbend clutch in first, but decided that the FASS needs to go in first instead. I'm worried that my fuel pressure is too low and my clutch still has some life in it.
