Exhaust & CAI questions

I'm finally getting around to doing the exhaust and intake on my truck but have a few questions before making my decision...I would like to just replace the muffler and leave everything else in place (good / bad choice??)
So I've narrowed down to the Donaldson. What's the difference between the M090535 & M090544 other then the Inlet & Outlet Diameters? Is one louder then the other?
comments, questions, suggestions??..

Question on the intake....
I just ordered an AFE Stage 2 intake with the PG7 filter and was thinking about using an Outerwares over the filter. Anyone else using a prefilter on their open box CAI?
Most of my driving is highway/city.. the only off road use my truck see's is towing the toys to the sand dunes....

thanks for any and all input!

Pre filter will work fine, and putting just a muffler on will be what most tell you to do, either that or lose it.

Yes the pre-filter is good. Keeps any larger crude from getting on the filter material, keeps most water/snow off of filter material and will make it a lot easier to clean the filter.

Not sure the specific difference on those, but you need 4" inlet/outlet for replacing muffler on your OEM exhaust. And I agree just replacing the muffler with a high flow one is the simplest and cheapest exhaust upgrade.

Do you have state inspections?? Here where I'm at, I don't and when I changed to the 5" t.b. I lost my kitty somehow. I get compliments on how my truck sounds. It's not too loud and I don't have to talk loud to have a conversation either. If interested on how much I paid/where I got it, pm me.

Wow, Nevada has diesel smog laws?? Ca. doesn't til the '07.5 (the 6.7's) and then those trucks will have to be smogged, that's why I didn't buy one. Then reading some of these ppl having some problems with the filter stuff, I'm really glad I didn't buy a new one.

I don't know what brand of muffler that was in my kit except that it was 'high perf.' Inside is 5" through n through w/ louvers. I have roughly 2500 miles on it and still sounds good. I'll be reusing it when I go (black) single stack. I'm going to try no muff. 1st, if too loud I'll put the muff. in.

I run a prefilter on my PG7. It quiets it down a little (I don't feel like spending another 400 some odd dollars for the quiet AFE intake). I haven't noticed any power loss from the prefilter...keeps the filter cleaner as well.
part number I use: (yellow AFE prefilter) 28 10031
fits
2490010
2491002

Thanks for the info on the pre filters guys!

Whats the differences between the 40 and the 51? Does being shorter make it louder or did you get that one because of the space it needs to fit into under the truck?

Space is one concern, but I have heard the 40 isn't much if any louder... And really I am just going for a little quieter than my current no muffler and kitty setup.

I like the idea of the Pro Dry...I oil my PG7 perfectly, no over oiling, but I find my prefilter catches a bit of it...no biggie. i might try one of those....

I ran the AFE Stage I for a year plus with the PG7 filter. Cleaned and oiled it a few times. Then went to Stage II with PG7 for street and Standard filter for track. I used a pre-filter on everything except at the track. The PG7 filtered fine and I had two PG7 filters, so cleaning was not too much of a hassle. I always had a clean one ready to go on. The ProDry S seems to be a good option for me. I do believe that it flow more air than the PG7, but my white glove test when I take it off to check or clean shows pretty much the same filtering for my conditions as the PG7. No dirt/dust in the intake behind the filter. Cleaning is the same, just don't have to oil which is the pain.
