Engine Clatter to a Loud Knock..DEAD
Engine Clatter to a Loud Knock..DEAD
Moved this to the modded section, maybe a better response...
Just wanted to see if there were any experiences like my recent one last weekend.
I was driving about 5 hours on the interstate and got off at my home exit, while exiting the ramp the truck started to clatter at lower rpms. I had my TST on 3/1 only the entire trip for mileage purposes. When I took off from the stop the truck clattered louder the more fuel I gave it. I was starting to get concerned with the level of the noise. After I got to the house I changed the fuel filter and drove back into town to fill up with fuel to see if that would help (I put an extra amount of Lucas in the fuel tank this time, always have run Lucas or Power Service). It stalled out on me at the first stop sign but started back up. I filled up with fuel and while heading home the clatter turned into a small knock. I gave it a hard shot of the pedal to try and clean her out and all heck broke loose, black smoke and a loud engine knocking. The truck shut down and I had to call my wife to tow me home.
The truck has been at the shop now since Monday with no word on the problem. Dealer says DC is having them run lots of tests to find the problem. I pulled the TST and FASS off prior to taking it in so...
One thing I noticed when it stalled out was some white smoke coming out of the breather tube down by the starter, very scary. The oil looked good and the coolant was clean, no external signs of damage. The truck would crank over but sounded very different with no signs of wanting to start.
Any similiar experiences?? Any ideas?
Thanks, Adam.

Engine light did not turn on when the truck died the first time. When it did that I turned the TST off and it continued to make the noise. When it finally did die the TST was still off and the check engine light did come on. It gave me 336 & 628 (crank and low pump volt). I know the 628 is common with the FASS system but I never had that code thrown before this.
I pulled the TST kit and the FASS off and the truck won't start at all. I will build fuel pressure with the factory pump back on.
I think you are right about the cp3/injectors. Just surprized that they could make that loud of a noise. Really sounded much more severe when she finally died, and it doesn't explain the white smoke from the breather tube. Almost more like an injector took out a piston then possibly the head gasket went out from high cylinder pressure??

what was the temp when it was smoking out the breather?? I have seen mine puff a little when it gets real cold just figured it was the warm oily air hitting the cold and creating condensation. I don't remember what the temps were around mich. on monday but it could be it. Also did you check your fuel filter. Did it maybe get clogged??? Obviously it could very well be something more but who knows something as simple as a filter has done worse???..
It was pretty mild out, no condensation from temperature, it was smoke. The fuel filter that I pulled out looked good. It only had about 4k miles on it and no crap in the filter bowl.
Still nothing back from the dealer today, been 4 days total now. Any DC guys out there know what they are up to possibly in regards to the series of tests they have to run? The service manager mentioned they were waiting on some special tool for measuring the fuel from the injector pump. They should pull the head and find out what is messed up under there IMO.
I need this truck on Tuesday for work, they said they will have it ready by "the weekend", yeah right.
Whatever happened to the days when they just fixed stuff instead of turning it into a science experiment. I want my old 24v back, this blows.

Lay off that Lucas fuel treatment. It will accumulate and plug filters, especially when you are commanding lots of fuel. This stuff is a good lubricant but.......
This is only my experience..........

Interesting that you say that. What's your experience with it? I've been running it for the last 40k miles and the truck runs better than ever. Still on the original injection pump. I put a 1/4 of the big bottle in at a time every fill up. Not trying to argue just curious what your problems were because that is the very first time I've ever heard of an additive causing a problem.
Big Blue,
My experieces are limited with this additive but I can say that I have had no less than two events where the truck was starving for fuel under full throttle (sputter) just after fueling and adding perhaps a greater than recommended amount of Lucas additive. It was obvious that something had changed and the only thing was fuel and additive. The first time I changed the filter (the one replaced had about 2K) and it still persisted and then quickly cleared after a couple hard runs.
The second time was a repeat of the first. I can smell the treatment when I open the fuel cap. It is relatively thick and must mix properly. Of course, I never fill the tank. This may be the problem.
I must say, the truck starts very quick for a 3rd gen. since using this additive. I use Communist Citgo fuel.

Problem Found?
Chris,
You may be on to something there with the Lucas, not for sure but a possibility. Dealer FINALLY called today, after a week, to tell me that my cp3 is junk, only builds about 4k psi. I am still not sure that the level of noise I heard could be caused from a failed pump, but we will see. Should have it back by next Wednesday. Only 18K miles on the truck, imagine that.

Man, I am not sure what to say about that....... I really can't believe that an additive only can cause pump failure? I can only relate my own experiences. When I am commanding max fuel flow and end up with something less, and this was always after fueling using the additive. Please let us know the results as I am sure many are interested.
I am sure most have seen the sticky nature of this product at many parts counters. Good film strength but what effect on a filter at least short term???

Still Down
Well, DC had the dealer put on a new cp3 today. Didn't solve the problem, truck not fixed, won't start. Now they are waiting to hear back from DC on what to do next. Had the truck 10 days now and still don't know the problem, what bs! DC needs to tell them to pull the dang head off and figure it out, I guarantee that is where the problem lies.
Maybe know more tomorrow when I get home and go down there and raise some hell.

See if they did an injecor block off test. The cp3 pump can't maintain fuel pressure if there are more than 2-3 injectors hung open.ie.Dumping more fuel in than it can pump@ cranking speed. Also ask if they've tryed replacing the rail pressure sensor,& the bypass pressure valve in the rail.
