Sounds like you droped a valve seat and punched a hole in the piston been there an done that. I could be wrong wouldent be the first time. If they do a compression test it will show with out pulling the head

I'm another 06'er with nothing but trouble. I took it in this last time for a loud knock/rattle that appears at idle when my truck is fully warm. They know I've been in there 25 plus days so they get me in and out quick now. The deaf shop foreman said it was the valves? Said some were loose and some were tight, she's ready to pick up. I go pick it up and it is a little quieter when driving but idle shows the knock even more. I say that's it, I'm outta here. I get asked to turn the truck off at drive thru's. Never did that happen in my 03. I know something is wrong. I need a good mechanic, who can hear, to tell me it is an injector or whatever. I still have never gotten over 11.8 mpg & get 7.5 towing my 24ft Keystone. Any ideas anyone. Please.

Truck Update

Well I went down to the dealer yesterday afternoon to find out what the *&%$ was going on with things. They said the #5 injector was bad and that would be in tomorrow and the truck would be fixed (and we would all be happy right?).

So they gave me a F150 to drive while mine if being fixed, I needed to get some things out of my truck so I drove around to the shop bay where my truck was. The mechanic was already gone (4pm) so I asked another guy what he knew about it. This is where it got good, the guy working on my truck is not even a diesel tech! But the diesel tech did come over to me and said he thought they had it running with #5 injector isolated, so I said lets see? He started the truck up and wow it sounded bad, white smoke out the exhaust (as expected) BUT the turbo sounded like it had pennies rolling around in it! The diesel tech heard that and quickly shut the truck down, opened the cap on the valve cover and watched the smoke roll out with me. AND I said Injector only?? He sure got a funny look on his face then, kinda like "woa this thing is FUBAR".

So, I STILL think it dropped a valve, took out an injector/piston and sent some remains through the turbo. I raised heck with the manager today, so we will see what happens now???

Want to hear the good news? My new company truck that is coming in is a Powerstroke.

Was it a heavy white smoke out the breather?? Did the engine start to lug, rpm drop when it started puking white smoke out the breather? Last diesel I saw do the white smoke out the breather was on the dyno at the Cat dealer. Rebuilt it, ran it loaded for an hour +, getting ready to cut the water off and let her cool off and this white cloud started to pour out the breather tube, engine started to lug, rpms dropped and the cloud got bigger, we jumped into action, one guy to cut off the water to the dyno and the other guy to hit the throttle and shut her down.

We jumped on it, customer needed it in a hurry, pulled the cylinder head off and found a galled piston and liner. Reman liners from Cat, everyone figured it just had a tight spot in it. Put in a new liner and piston assembly and fixed it.

Not to sure what the exhaust on this hog looked like, cause we just ran a short stack off the turbo into a exhaust tube through the roof of the building. I'm pretty sure it would turn over, just would not run. I don't know if this might be the problem....but that white smoke out the breather like you talk about brings back memories. Good luck!

She's coming home....finally!

Yup, refer to the comment I made a while back.

Called the dealer today to find out what the heck is going on with my truck, they haven't called all week. Well anyhow, they put on a new injector pump (not it) put in a new #5 injector (not it) and finally pulled the head after 2 weeks in the shop. Come to find out it dropped a valve, put a hole in the piston, cracked the head and took out the turbo!

They were in the process of putting in a new long block w/turbo today. Should have it back on Monday. Since when do CTD start dropping valves??? I personnally have never heard of one doing it but it did happen to me.

Maybe some of those ticking sounds you other 05 owners are hearing is not always an injector??

Back in action in 4 days, only now I have to break in a new motor again. There goes my good mileage I just started getting.

It's very rare if not almost unheard of thing but it can and does happen. Just luck of the draw. I'm glad they got it figure out though.

Thanks Big Blue, but you know how sometimes you just get to be lucky one on these things. "If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all".

Bad break on the engine but better early on so it could be fixed. Don't look at breaking in a new motor as bad because it is possible that you may get better mileage to start with on this one and then just continue to improve. At least you were home when things went bad and you got a new long block rather than a rebuild on your engine.

Wow

That's not good news, but I am glad for you that your warranty is covering it. This must be extremely rare, but now I read that at least one other has had this happen. What's up with this? How many miles were on your truck at the time??

I really don't drive my truck hard and It doesn't sound like this man does either. What gives? Is a 'dropped' valve considered to be a broken valve stem?

Since my transmission fund is now depleted, perhaps I should have a motor fund, since I am too far modded to go back to stock. Hmmmmm

Chris

small world ...

ran into a guy i know that just bought a mega cab ...

he's had a new cummins' about every year since they've been out for his timber company, runs 'em hard under warranty and when warranty runs out he trades it in for another ... he had an '03 an '04 and now the mega cab ...

saw him at the local gas station and told him i wanted to see the interior of the new truck ...

he shook his head and said "so would i"

he had the EXACT same problem as discussed here ...

he has 8,000 miles on it and they are giving him a new longblock ...
