Drop Hitch

I was wondering if anyone had any drop hitch pics or ideas that are about a 12inch drop capable of pulling a 20' enclosed car trailer.

My Drop I have now is made by action accessories out of Portland, OR. It is 12 inches and the reciever peice is inly 2x2inch hollow tubing. I was wondering if I will bend it or break it off? THa guys at my local off-road shop say i might need to beef it up. They have a custom hitch assembly with stingers that mount to the frame, it looks pretty sweet, probably overbuilt, but will get the job done. The only problem is it is upwards of 600 bucks.

So does anyone think or have a testimony of a basic drop surviving a tow like that?

Thanks, Taylor

P.S. I forgot there was a towing forum, oops.

How much weight? I run a pintle with a ball good for 8 ton, they also make the same set up good to 10 ton with a bigger drop than mine. I believe they run about $130-$150 complete, I took mine off a trade in, the guy couldn't get it out so he left it.... gas wrench had it out in no time!

just becareful... just because the drop pintle hitch maybe rated for 8tons... and the ball good for like 7k (for a 2" ball).... your stock 2" reciever thats bolted to your frame will be stressed by the torque that 12" leverarm provides on a hard stop... trailer brakes will help...

I got 1 of these, Rapid Hitch. It works awesome! They make a 10'in drop as well. It will handle 1500 tongue weight and 12,000 pulling if I'm not mistaken. There usually run between $150-$200 bucks.

i learned this the hard way! I had an older lifted chevy and was towing my dads trailer with his race car in it with no trailer brakes and a lady pulled out in front of me and i had to slam on the brakes......needless to say the trailer, car, and bed of my truck were destroyed! heck of a learning experience! later we weighed the trailer and car and it only wayed 6000, so just cause it says it will means under perfect conditions, not real world conditions. just keep that in mind--

Thanks, I am going to make braces to go from the bottom of my drop up to the framerails. Then hopefully it will be solid. I got the idea from a guy who made is own hitch from scratch. So basically I will copy the idea of his.

Thanks, Taylor

you could if you have the skill/tools make your own.. the truck's reciver is open at the back, so you could make a drawbar that extends a few inches past it with another 5/8" hole... from there you could build a support bar to pin to it and down to the drop on the drawbar.. not as strong as a support to the frame i know, but simpler to design [although there are some holes in the frame that are pretty easy to access - i have lights mounted from some]

This will be far stronger than going from the back of the reciever...

Yeah, thats another way to look at it, my drop has about 1.5-2 inches of play side to side, so I need to take care of that. Thanks though.
