Question Donaldson or nelson muffler on 03

Does anyone have one of these on an 03. I'm wondering if without the cat on the 03 if drone will be a problem. Thanks.

I put the 51" Donaldson on my 04. Very happy. Quiet going down the road but just a little bark with the windows down. My buddy liked it so much he put a 51" Nelson on his 03. Do a search, it has been quite popular. The muffler is mounted as far back as possible to plumb into the 4" rear pipe and an adapter or 4" down pipe is necessary. No drone, works great.

It has been a while, but if I remember correctly, they come in 26", 36", and 51" lengths. I originally put on a 36" back when I had the stock turbo still and it sounded real good with just a slight hint of drone right at 1500 RPMs, which really isn’t an RPM range that you would do any cruising. As soon as I changed something though (I think it was the turbo), I had lots of drone when towing. I later ended up adding a 9" resonator at the end of the downpipe and all is good now. To be safe and drone free, you might want to stick with the 51" unless that monster muffler is just too quiet for you.

I would like to have alittle more sound but not straight pipe loud. I tried a magnaflo once and the drone was bad enough that my ear drums tingled, It was on the truck for about 15 hrs. It sounds like the nelson 51 in. is the way for me to go. Thanks for the info.

I have done some searching and not been able to find a Nelson or Donaldson muffler anywhere. My truck is striaght piped but am now expecting my first child in the next couple of months. My truck is the "family" vehicle. Hence, I want to toon it down a little (but not too much ) Any suggestions?

I have the 51" Nelson 86131M. It is great. No drone! Got it at Cummins Northwest for $66.

It's straight threw and no baffle.

Where in the system do you have the muffler mounted? I am considering this muffler too. I just want to hear a little more turbo. With the stock system the turbo whistle is almost non existent.

the reason I ask is that I have an Astro camper top on the truck and I sometimes sleep back there while the other half drives and all the drone stories have scared me off from modifying the exhaust. All Im really looking for is a little more sound and a lot more turbo whine. I cant even hear the turbo on the stock system. Turbo sound is music to my ears, but I doubt I could sleep while my brain is reverberating from drone. Oh yeah, I doubt the wife would appreciate the drone either.

My Nelson is mounted as far back as possible, right before the axle.

I'm sure it will fit. Don't know what difference in sound or drone it may make.

I've got a 34" Nelson and no drone. Sounds awesome! A little louder than stock, but not so much that it's annoying. I got mine from a Cummins dealer here in Ft. Worth, TX.
