Did my tone ring mod today..
Well, my mileage went down while driving with the Quad box on the 60hp setting. It only dropped .5 mpg but I sure was hoping for a gain. I'm leaving the box off this week to see if it helps any that way....
ive ran a couple of tanks through mine now.i kinda jumped the gun and did it right after my xzt tow box install,so im not sure on mileage of each independently of one another.im up 1.5 mpg now,but not sure which one did what.....i towed with it for the first time today, and ill tell you right now..much improved.no doubt,it picks up anytime i get ready now.i towed with just the box with the same load, and it was better than stock, but you had to get it up in rpm`s to get the full effect.now,it just pulls constant, with alot more response....for bang for the buck, the quad tow box from the online store here(unbelievable low price)and the tone ring mod is hard to beat.as a side note, with the ring mod done and the tow box, hold it to the floor, anything past 2k,will leave a smoke trail just as thick as my 02 with dd3`s and a puck on it did...and pulls every bit as hard............bama
That's interesting. My truck seems to smoke LESS now that I've done the tone ring mod. I'm HOPING that means it is burning fuel more efficiently. It will still smoke when I get on it though.
I have been hearing about 1/16" or so. Not sure much as making the hole bigger, just the same size but to the left of it, counterclockwise if you had the hole at noon position.
I think even if you make the hole, now slotted, too large, the 4 bolts will stop it from going that far.
I just slotted what I thought was good enough. Tried it and thought it could go more. So I ground down some more. I'm not sure if the second time did any good or not but I think it did.
Either way, I have noticed a difference. Both in fuel MPG and power under the 2000 rpm zone.

Welp,
So far my results are as follows:
Stock setting I'm up .5 mpg
60 hp setting I'm down .5 mpg
This week I'm trying the 100hp setting and it sure is more fun than the stock setting!!

OK, the weather finally played nice so I crawled under the truck and spend about 45 minutes doing the mod. For those who requested, here are my before and after pictures of the dowel hole:

The tone ring, right off the truck

The tone ring, bored out on the left hand side about 1/8", using a dremel.
So far I have only driven it about 15 miles but I noticed two things so far: There is DEFINATELY more low end power, and I can make her smoke a lot more now under heavy skinny pedal
100% worth the 45 minutes it took me, and I was working slow.

The weather and my schedule finally cooperated for me today also. It took me about 30 minutes to do the mod. Only because me and the balancer didnt get along on the reinstall and I was swatting mesquitos at the same time. The power is definatly up on the bottom end. Mine is actually stronger off the clutch and feels like my old 12V does. Thats a major improvement! So far my milage by the overhead has dropped a little but I drove through alot more stop and go than usual and it will be a while till I actually rack some miles up to hand calc it. Overall I am extreamly happy with the mod and will leave it this way even if the milage has gone down as it drives so much different. The wife even noticed the acceleration difference coming from a dead stop and I didnt even have it floored!
For all you guys thinking about trying this mod I have a few tips for you.
1. Lock the truck in gear and use a large 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar to loosen the balancer bolts before removing the fan belt. If you do it right you can use one hand on the ratchet with a decent tug to break it loose while holding the balancer with the other. It will still spin some but not nearly as much.
2. This is the big one. For removing and installing the fan belt access it from the bottom with a large ratchet or breaker bar. Hook a small cargo strap around a tie rod end on the passenger side and the other to the ratchet. pull the ratchet most of the way around by hand then finish with the ratcheting strap. This way tension will stay off the adjuster and you can use both hands to manipulte the belt on the accesories. I cant imagine doing this any other way as the adjuster is a real pain in the butt because of the proximity of the fan.
I definatly recommend this mod! Good luck with it guys.

did mine this morning. noticed 150* drop in egt. That is a definate plus, my mileage has always been ok, about 17 in town, 20+ highway at 60. Engine pulls really hard with the quad box on 100hp. With a sustained WOT blast, I reached 1100*, but not nearly as fast as before, and it didnt go much higher than that, I could easily go to 1300* before. Only took a 10 mile drive for the test, so no mileage update.
BTW, make sure that you really tighten the crap out of the 4 bolts, or it will get loose and set a P0336 code. Now it looks like I have to go get a scanner to clear it.
Good mod, thanks guys

I did mine yesterday and noticed a little more power and according to the overhead my mpg is up by2mpg I took Robert Clition's advice on the cargo strap but I cheated a little more by using the cargo strap and rachet to hold the fan belt tension , loosen the bolts and slid the pully back enough to get the tone ring out without taking the fan belt off letting it hold up the pully (dont let it fall on your head, Just takes a few minutes
I will put the 5thwheel next weekend for 500 miles and see how that does
