Just do it. If it doesn't do anything for you then it takes about 5 minutes to change it back to stock.

I'm not sure if it will work on an '02. As far as I know this has only been done to 3rd Gen trucks ('03 and up)

It's a little early to say for sure, but my '03 seems to have benefited significantly (see my fuel mileage above).

The beauty of it is that it's so simple to do and so easy to change back if it doesn't work that EVERYONE should at least try it.

Why don't you give it a try and you'll be the first to post your results.

I think I will, since the wifey-poo left for Canada this moring for a week! I can mod my truck all week without grief or funny looks! And play the guitar as loud as I want!!!

Look for results on Monday. I'll try to work it in.

One thing I can promise, if I spin it the wrong way....you'll never here about it. I don't want to be a 'retard' like some of ya'll! I'll just keep that little knowledge to myself

I have been observing mileage for over a month now on my overhead average reading. Not that it is accurate, but I have a base for mileage to compare results to that will be at least precise, if not accurate. I set the cruise on 60 mph every night, reset the average reading on the same hilltop, and drive the same exact roads for 35 miles. I average 19.5 to 20.0 depending on headwind. Not bad for a truck with training wheels and loaded with tools!

Like I said earlier, it didn't help my "individual" truck, by far i am a minority. But given the small amount of time and effort needed to do the mod.... its worth the try. Think about it, how many mechanical mods can you do that if they don't work right you can go back to stock in 10 minutes with no harm done? Not many on these electronic engines.

I guess my only other question is......if it is that freggin' simple, why don't they just move it over a little at the factory? Are they dumb or where the DC folks just kicked in the head by mules as small children? If something so small can help out, even in the smallest of amount, why not do it to begin with? Retards. I'm still going to try it.

The timeing is retarded on purpose so the factory can pass the emissions standards set by the Gov.

We like to be known as "Mentally challenged" thank you!!!

My mileage is down across the board. I'm testing the 140hp setting this week but it's not looking good for me even though the power is up. That may be enough to keep it where it is though!! The only thing I'm wondering is if they have switched to winter blend here in Va. I can't seem to find this info anywhere and I don't speak the right language to ask anyone at the stations I use!! If they have switched over than I would actually have an increase because I usually lose 1 mpg with the winter fuel. It seems that all my readings are down about .5 mpg which isn't really that bad in itself. If they've changed to the winter blend then I would have gained about 1 mpg. We'll see.

Tone Ring Mod

Well, like many others here & at the TDR, I did my "tone ring mod", this afternoon. After a few helpful suggestions on how to get the bolts out, I got-er-done.

The engine seems to idle & run smoother & accelerate a bit quicker. Got up to the redline quicker than before.

This is an inexpensive mod & well worth the trouble, in my opinion. I bought a 15mm socket from the local pawn shop for $1.50, and a "rat tail" bastard, round file from Harbor Freight, for $2.15 including tax. So, for $3.65, and a little effort, I got a nice, mild performance mod. Quite happy with it.

Just wanted to Thank the members, here, for all their input regarding this mod. Especially, SUPERDUTY. My understanding is that he came up with the mod.

Belt Removal?

Went under the truck to do this mod and couldn't figure out how to remove the belt. Any advice would be appreciated. 70/30 freeway/town driving, at an average of about 15 mpg. Would love to see more. Thanks.

There is an idler below the alternator. You insert a 1/2" breaker bar into the square hole in the idler and pull on it to take the tension off the belt.

Hint: make sure you get the belt properly aligned on all the pulleys when you put it back on.

Is this mod ok to do with Bully Dog tripple dog and safe. My dealer is CHICKEN$#!! when it comes to doing anything to truck. Only 2 in town the other wants me to leave truck for the day just for oil change so i am sure they r just as bad when it comes to doing any mods to truck.

I doubt your dealer will do this for you. They will pretty much do bolt-ons and replacements but not modifications. Plus it just kind of takes away from the free mod if you have to pay them $65.00 hr to do it...

just for clarification, which direction is right?

if i look at the motor from the front
it spins in the CW directoin

and i want to take the tone ring off and
file the trailing edge of the dowel hole, which is on the CCW edge (from the front) (file the back side of the hole, so it can move further ahead of the position it is in now)

and turn the ring about one tooth further CW than the OEM position.

do i need to take a A TON pics on this, and someone can post a FAQ?
