No this isn't the typical high-idle enable feature question...This is just a general question regarding my idle increasing to 1000rpm "naturally" when ambient temps are below approx. 35deg F. This feature happens after approx. 2-3 mins of stationary idiling...Even turing on my wipers/seats etc., will 'kick' the idle back down...Then two/three minutes later she climbs back up to 1000rpm on the button. Because of the regularity of it happening, I can only imagine that others CTD's do it also...I've just never heard of this 'feature' being discussed before (and yes I searched before posting)... I guess my question is, if this happens with others, why worry about a high idle/cruse feature being enabled by the dealer? .Anyone?

I've noticed that mine does that now that the temps are dropping. Didn't do it until temps got into the 30's. Doesn't matter, I'm having the dealer activate the high idle next week. I'm frequently on the road with emergency lights turned on for traffic control. It's a feature that m dealer never told me about, and they know how I use the truck. Also going to "flash" the ECM.

This is a normal function. I am pretty sure the owners manual talks about it, but if it doesn't I have seen it discussed on this board and some others before. Mine has just started this also.

 

Mine too! As the 6sp does not have a high idle to enable (or so I am told) I am glad it does it.

 

I was told by some here the other that they get the high idle enabled so they can set the idle higher than the 1000-1100 rpms that it does automatically. It helps with the morning warm up to have it idle higher like 1500 rpms.

 

The factory high idle only works in the cold weather, some like it to work in the summer when they are useing the air and letting the truck idle for extended periods of time.

Two reasons:

1) Sometimes you may want a high idle during conditions that would not normally cause the truck to idle up itself.

2) Some folks think that 1000 RPM's is not sufficient to warm the truck up very quickly.

I wish I could have the high idle/cruise enabled, but I have a 6 speed so I'm stuck with using a stick. To adjust RPM's I simply move the seat a little forward or a little backward.

 

Yes, this is a feature programmed in at the factory. It's temp dependant - both outside and IAT. It's only supposed to work if you're stationary - no speed, though going backwards doesn't seem to affect it, in neutral with the parking brake on (though releasing the brake doesn't always seem to disengage mine, so I'm probably off on this one).

The other day, the temp was below 20 and mine went right to 1000 RPM on start up. The next day, I plugged it in all night to see what would happen and no high idle. Started pretty quietly, though, so I guess it didn't need it.

 

Cummins programmed it in to help keep cylinder temp.'s up so the fuel will still ignite when its to cold out. I know the service manual gives a little speach about it.
