Chrome Stacks

Need to know if anybody ahs any info on how adding a chrome stack exhaust system (4 inch) would hinder or help the performance of an 05 Dodge. I pull alot of trailers (weight 6,000-16,000 lbs.) this system would be a flow through system no muffler or cat.

It will definately help with EGTs and to open it up and let the turbo spool faster, but it will be loud. If that matters to you.

How Loud

How loud are we talking about. I've never heard stacks on a Cummins.

I would have to guess it's very loud since I only have a straight through 4" pipe(not cat & muf) and it is loud.

Just a suggestion.........

You may want to find someone on this site (or other sites) that have stacks that lives nearby (for a test ride & drive) so as to help you decide easier. It may just help you decide if stacks are or are not for you.....and save you some money to boot if they're not for you.

Normal driving unloaded it's not super loud, however when you pull a load she will tend to liven up a a little. I ended up putting a 14" SS straight through muffler on mine, it's now worlds better. Killed drone by 80%, considerably quieter in the cab, and also got rid of the raspy sound our 3rd gens make when straight piped. Here is the muff I got, 25 clams off eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33636

I recomend this if you tow, nice deep mellow tone, that still sounds like a dominating Cummins, yet it won't **** off your neighbors too bad.

Thumbs up

saw/heard a stacked 3rd gen for the first time the other day...it was a single wheel qc...looked kind of funny on a single wheel. But the sound....oh my god!!!!...if i hadn't seen it first i would have thought it was a pete rolling through town!!!!...sounded awesome!!!!!

Ratherbemudding:

great looking rig...i'd be interested in seeing a picture of the plumbing from the underside...looks like you did a top notch-professional install...what all is involved and how much did it cost you?

I am running 5" stacks. I have towed fairly heavy on two occasions, and if I towed routinely the stacks would have to go. At a bare minimum I would install a free flowing muffler or resonator. It was loud enough in the cab that you couldn't carry on a "normal" conversation, especially going up even modest grades.

It's a pretty subjective thing, and I agree with the advice above - find someone running stacks and go for a ride.

My '03 is 5" stacked the whole exhaust minus about 12" is also 5", with the stock turbo it was loud but it was tolerable. Now that I have an aftermarket turbo it is obnoxiously loud and even deeper tone, it can almost drive you crazy towing at interstate speeds!

I have 5" stacks on mine with a large single turbo and it is quite loud while under boost. I can run up to about 70 mph but then it gets very loud in the cab. If you were towing the boost would be higher at a lower speed so the noise would be greater at a lower speed. I always wanted a straight piped truck and now am looking for a possible muffler to install.

Straight piped stacks on a cummins is VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY loud with the windows down. With the windows up, they are very liveable.
