Care to take a poll?

given the following:

i'm NOT looking for dyno #'s
i DON'T track race
i DO occasionally fool w/"discourteous" drivers
i DO tow a 9k toy box to go take the family out to play
i DO use my rig as a daily driver (mpg's are important)
i DO have a budget (800-1K bucks)

and i would like the following mods: exhaust, smarty jr., hts vb, fuel system...
what would your choice be for the next step? keep in mind that while i'm not mechanically challenged, i'm at a point in life where i'd much rather somebody else have to dig out the grease from under their nails.....so add in the labor

Next step is gonna be:

get more money...
turbo, a 62/65-13ss will fit your bill nicely
get some more money...
a nice set of 90hp ddps should get your truck in to much more comfortable towing territory.

Get you alot of money...
get your 48re rebuilt for your specs, then your truck will be capable of anything you want to throw at it.

Edit: now that i seen the poll, SmartyJr and exhaust should do you good for now.

Gonna have to say that with the budget, a fuel system and exhaust upgrade would take most of it. I tend to do upgrades in conservative fashion, and wouldn't add any power until those two were taken care of.

I would do the fuel system first. You will be doing your injectors a service with 2 micron fuel delivered to your CP3. I didnt realize how bad my stocker was holding me back until I put on my Walbro.

i was told by a local diesel shop out here that a fuel system (fass to be exact) would be the single most important upgrade before anything else. i wanted to believe, but i'm a rookie and part of me thought he was just trying to get a chunk of change......did you get the fuel system before the smarty? if so, what kind of difference did you feel. the shop guy told me there would be a definite boost in power just from delivering fuel efficiently.......thanks

Just noticed that you are not running a fuel pressure gauge. In stock trim, these trucks starve for fuel under hard acceleration. I could run mine darn near to zero.

The SMARTY will call for more fuel than will be supplied to the CP3, and it will cause it to sputter. I would definitely wait on any power adders until such time as you get the fuel system squared away.

i'm looking at the smarty JR, not the big gun smarty...regardless, let me ask you the same question i asked matego above. did you do the fuel mod (fass) first? and if so, what was the difference from stock?.....thanks

A fuel system is a supporting mod. I had the Edge "hot" only before I put on my fuel pump. It was hard for me to spend that kind of money for something that "could" make some more power. In my particular application, it felt like another setting on the Edge.... like going from #3 to #4. Put on a f/p gauge and see how bad you pull down the pressure. I found my truck likes around 26 PSI and everything set to kill it will drop to 22 or so.

I cant tell you about the Smarty, I havent loaded it yet. All of my bum friends are trying it out on their trucks!

Junior will most likely starve the CP3 as well, based upon my experience with the stock truck. The FASS went on this truck prior to any power adders, so I can only tell you that after the power was brought on, the fuel pressure to the CP3 has not been an issue.

I could pull the stock truck's pressure down to zero. Gauges went on first.

exhaust work is a waste of money at the level you want to go. the 4" is more than enough. do a muffler/meow meow delete if you want it louder.

i choose the vb and smarty jr.

My vote is for JR and VB as well. The stock lift pump will usually support and additional 80-100hp which is what the JR will give you. Exhaust for what few mods you are talking is a waste of time. So with no need for a lift pump to support the power, there are only two of the four left. JR and VB. The VB is a very important upgrade for that 9k of towing. You DO NOT want to add any power and not do the VB for towing 9k. You will like the VB for towing too.

NO DOUBT...JR and VB. You're a little over on $$ though with labor. Maybe $1200 or so.
