After 7 and working on my 8'th Dodge. I think people flat make it up! You want good fuel mileage. Drive with egg shells under your feet, both the trottle and brake. Speed up slowly and coast to a stop not standing on the throttle and then the brakes. Air your tires up.

a speed governer set at 55mph.

IMO the intake and exhaust go together. Neither one does much without the other and there is also the benefit of lower EGT's. I would also look at advancing the timing with the tone ring mod or Rokktech sensor or some sort of chip/programmer (you have to think about warranty issues with those). Those three things may show a noticeable improvement. I have seen around a 2mpg improvement w/ Intake/Exhaust/timing mod on my last 2 CTD's.

Some good comments there. I have owned a few of these myself and I can add that beyond stock, its all about optimizing efficiency. My '05 really can get around 20mpg, but the truck is not stock. I have spent some $$ on this truck. My 1994 will get better than 20 on a bad day, but this is minimal emissions, original equipment technology. For me and my '05 the built transmission made the biggest difference in mpg., and a major increase in accelleration as well. The triple disc converter is very tight. Keeps power applied like a manual, but does this without losing rpm or turbo spool.

Cummins spends big $$ trying to extract .1 mpg. Of course, they have a different rule book than we do

Is one box, downloader, intake, turbo, or exhaust going to promise better mileage, don't count on it. It is a combination of all these I believe. The power is not bad either...........

get a programmer, then drive very easy. Keep the stock rims and rims if you get new tires go tall and skinny, stay away from the meats. keep your RPM's below 1700. I have been getting about 15 driving around like my mom, but I've got lower gears and big tires that stick way out.

With my current setup in my sig. I usually can get in the upper teens up to 21mpg. My highest is 21.8 going 65mph, I almost got 800 miles on 1 tank of fuel. A box, exhaust, and intake might help but over all it is how you drive. If your drive like your are in NASCAR than MPG is going to go down, drive like a old grandma mileage usually goes up. Fuel additives, some say they work some say they don't. I use a additive not for fuel mileage but for overall lube.

A egg under your gas paddle would be the cheapest tip for fuel mileage.

Well for the first 25,000 miles or so I averaged 13mpg city and 16mpg highway at 75mph empty. That was with air intake, exhaust, one or another 100hp box. For the last 30,000 miles at least with the mods in my signature set at about 120hp level for daily driving I average 15mpg all city stop, stop and go. I average anywhere from 19-20mpg on the highway at 75mph.

Mileage

My 91 got almost 20 mpg running 80-90 mph from Denver to eastern NY With AC blasting. Then after a 50 hp injector upgrade it gets 22.8 in "normal" highway driving say 70 to 75 mph.
The 2007 which weighs LOTS more gets 15.4 to 17.6 no mods installed...yet

I avg just over 22mpg, but mine is 2WD with a 5spd, stock tires/rims. I'm almost to 100,000 miles and keeps going up. I think a big factor is tire pressure/rotation. I am still running the original Michelin LTX's. Maybe one of these days the tread will wear off...
