Best Clutch For G56 racing???
Best Clutch For G56 racing???
Ive got a 07 4X4 g56 with 15k on the odo. I recently got the diablo/ puck stack with a boost fooler (thanks to bigcat83) & my stock clutch cant even begin to hold the power, even with the diablo on "performance" with no puck! I need a new clutch asap! I want to be able to drag race and launch in 3rd 4wd without any slipage. I also want to be able to shift as fast as possible. I know Im not runing a crazy amount of power right now, but would like to be able to run ALOT in several months without any slipping. I tow a little, mainly boats and small trailers. The guy at South Bend told me the 6 button solid 3600lb. dual disk was the one I needed. Anyone have this one? Is the noise at idle anoying? Can you get used to the hard engagement and back a trailer fairly easy? How is the pedal pressure? Everyone beside the South Bend guy tells me that the sprung hub DD is the besst for fast shifting and is also more steetable. My head is spinning, so any info to point me in the right direction would be appreciated!!
Thanks,
Clay

A solid hub will be faster because it is lighter. It will clatter, however, and cause more vibration through the truck when at low RPMs in gear. For drag racing I suggest the HMR Street Drag. You won't find a faster shifter around.

Thanks for the info. You basically told me the same thng the South Bend guy told me. Im just confused because some people tell me the sprung hub shifts faster than the solid hub. Is this right? Also is the HMR street drag the clutch you have? It shifts fast and dosent slip with your power?
Thanks

Banshee knows what hes talking about though.
10-4, I run the Haisley Street Drag. Traditionally dual disks shift slower because they have more rotating mass hanging on the input shaft. Even though the disc hubs are solid, the weight of both of them put together puts a lot more load on the synchros. I haven't weighed a sprung hub out of a SB dual disc, but a single disc sprung hub is significantly heavier than the hubs in the Street Drag. I have never slipped it because of power, but I have launched with over 20 psi in 4wd, and it handles it fine. I do launch in 2nd and not 3rd (gearing is too tall with the 35s), but it has handled a lot of abuse. I'm on my first rebuild now, but the original lasted over 2 years, 40k miles, and probably 100-150 drag passes. I wouldn't have another clutch for drag racing.
Hope this helps!

Yes that helps alot. Is this your daily driver? Im not concerned with the noise or slightly heavier pedal pressure but I would like to be able to back a trailer decently. Is it extremely "grabby" or can it be feathered a little? Also, what is the plate pressure on yours?
Thanks alot,

claymeis, if it helps call and talk to Curt at Haisley. I talked with him at length before I bought my clutch. Very, nice and helpful. For ME the sprung hub was what I wanted maninly becaue it is more of a "jack of all trades" to me.
And banshee, I dont know if you remember or not but thanks again for sharin your info with me when I was in a similar situation as ^^^ it was a big help.

I think it drives just fine day to day. The pedal is stiffer, but every clutch is going to be. The upgraded hydaulic unit from SouthBend is a worthwhile piece because the stocker will take a beating over time. I think the street drag is even smoother with a load than it is bobtail and you can slip is pretty good while backing a trailer. Every now and then if you let it out wrong it will kind of buck the truck, but again, almost all doubles can have that happen. Some will do it all the time, but this one is not a "lightswitch" clutch. Think the pressure plate is either 3000 or 3200 lbs, but a call to Haisley should fill in the technical details.
Hey Wap, anytime! Those sprung units are nice...
