absolute best setup for 1/4 mile drag racing

I'm thinking about getting a new truck, what would be the absolute best setup for 1/4 drag racing?
12v, 24v, or common rail; 2wd or 4wd; and what gear ratio?

thanks again

Ultimate NON-daily driver, built to the hilt 12v, twins, nos, 11.xx ET

Ultimate daily driver, Common Rail, twins, box adjustibility, nos, 11.xx, and can probably be turned down the near 500 for DD. Dual cp3, flux 5's, helix 2, billet DTT, NOS, lotsa air.

The diesel power magizine truck turned 11.76 on a silver bullet with the bottle.

oh yea, 3.55, more top end.

Depends on if you want to run some goofy gas or only #2.

4x4... You will spin the rears with a 2 wheel drive. It works better in 4 wheel drive, but hard on the driveline!!!

If thats the case then why are there a lot of 2wd drag trucks running slicks? Wouldn't it be lighter and still get good traction with this setup?

Why not do it with a longbed, wheelbase is a good thing. Plus, a diesel doesnt belong in a 1/2 ton short bed.

wheel base is good to a point, a 8 foot bed is not good for drag racing. a 6.5 bed would help with weight transfere. and i like my regular cab short bed diesel truck.

Light, light, light.

If you don't need it to be a DD, reg cab, short bed 2wd with slicks, locker and LIGHT... I don't like gunracer's project short bed, but it is an awesome platform for a drag truck to run low 11s

I was faced with the same decision.. I wanted a street legal truck with ac and stereo that would be competitive in pro street. I went with a 3rd gen half ton short bed, full cage, dana 80, SB/BB twins, nitrous, 13mm race pump, billet cam, etc, etc. I drove it one time, and now it's being rebuilt and rewired at Jeff Garmons shop. If I had it to do over again to compete in pro street I would have bought a chevy colorado and threw in a stock dmax with a programmer. Back it up with an allison with a shift kit and a torque converter. It would be much, much cheaper and run in pro street because the light weight. The rules changed for this year to no weight limits. The lighter the truck, the easier it would be to compete..

Brad, Pro Street is for full size pickup's.

If I were building a Pro Street style truck, I would probably build what Brad has done. 3rd gen 1500 RC, tubbed with sweet 12v. With the proper rear suspension, the 2wd's are nailing nice 60 ft's, catching some air with the front tires, and then have a 33" tire to aid in the upper part of the track.

5000 lbs is easily acheived with this platform and that equates to about 750hp to reach 130 mph. That should be enough to run 10's.

Brad I need to get down to Jeff's and to the "green room" to check out your truck.

David, I'm glad to hear it's for full size trucks only.. That will help keep the weight up closer to the 5,000 range which is good for me. I spoke to Jeff yesterday, and he said he should have it very close in two weeks. He wanted to know if I wanted to try pushing the single hard, or running the twins conservative. Which would you do? He said 650hp on diesel only was about as much as he'd seen uncorrected. I bought a silver bullet, and considered shooting for the 750 number which I feel would be perfect for the 10.50 index. What's the most power you've seen uncorrected for a single on diesel only?

A friend of mine is into racing... now he bought a dakota, like mentioned above, i just hope the built cummins he has built, ro swap in, will fit...

also what could be used as a tranny? would a normal built auto tranny work in the dakota?

Brad, it depends on what you are striving for out of the truck. If you are real concerned about driveability I would probably go with twins for more response on the street. But a nice single with a bottle can nail 750hp all day.

I've seen 600's on a single fuel only, don't remember actual numbers though.
