BDDL and High Idle Problem

I just installed the power pup and have found that the high idle isn't working any longer with the cruise control buttons. I attempted to reload the stock program and it is still gone. I contacted bully dog and they said to press the upper left button to enable the high idle function. I just tried that and still no high idle. Has anyone been able to enable the high idle and if so how did you get it to work?

Yes, You turn on the cruise control and press set once it is on. It should go into high idle mode. Then you can set the idle RPM with the accel Decel buttons.

Thanks for the reply. I had the high idle enabled prior to downloading the power pup. I just am wondering if I haven't properly downloaded the function or have I got a problem with the power pup. I can't seem to get it enabled and the only instructions I have are from Bully Dog over the telephone. They said to enter the download mode and then press the top left button to enable the function. I want to know if anyone has had problems getting the high idle enabled after downloading, or does anyone have any other instructions for getting the function turned on.

high idle

bpd i had that same problem. the high idle worked before i downloaded the pup. after i put the truck back stock it still didnt work. i used my drb II at work and it shows the high idle is enabled and it still doesnt work, hope this thing didnt screw up my ecm. i called bully dog and all the tech could tell me was send it in for an upgrade flash. i had version 1.4 and sent it in for version 1.5 and the crazy larry program. when it gets back i will try again and if it doesnt work bully dog will get a call.

I spoke with Justin...who left me a message later stating he talked with an engineer. Bully Dog said if I couldn't get it to work send it back and they would reflash the power pup. I just want to make sure I'm not messing something up when I try to turn it on. It sounds like I'm not if you checked it with a DRB II and it says it is on, but is not working.

So if you start your truck and Turn on the Cruise Control, Press Set, It does not raise Idle? It should bring it up to 900rpm or so then you control the RPM with the Accel and Decel buttons. I just got a copy of the New instructions they send out with all new Power Pups. They have updated the install guide a lot. It has instructions on it there. Maybe they can E-mail out the guide in a .PDF format?

I have Ver 1.4 on my DL'er and I started with a Beta ver 1.3 and it worked then as well.

this is the exact reason I stayed away from the downloaders. The stock program loaded in the downloader is not YOUR stock program, but the stock program they sucked off a truck int THEIR shops. If you went and had flashes done to your truck that were not in the truck that BD used to get the stock program from, well then they are gone. This is where it gets to be a pain. You could take it back in to the dealer and get it re-flashes, but he'll notice that you already had it flashed once and he'll probably know right then that you put a programmer on it. Flashes just don't mysteriously dissappear.

The safe option is to send the downloader back to BD and get it updated to the latest and greatest flash out there. But this becomes a cycle that you'll need to do every time a new flash comes out. What a pain.

These things can make some good power, but to me that are way to much trouble to deal with. The fact that you can't have in-cab adjustability, and you have to play the send it to get it re-flashed game keeps me in the modules. And heaven forbid if anything ever happened to it while you were uploading a new program into your PCM.

BBD, I'm starting to agree with you. I only bought the downloader because I wanted a box that had timing, duration, and a small increase in pressure. I didn't want to buy a TST because I don't like the idea of buying a box you can only use a third of it. As hot as this truck runs stock I wanted something that wouldn't run the EGT's out of sight. What I didn't know is that is what I got with the BDDL. I can't run the performance program without any tranny upgrades, because I can feel the overdrive clutches in the 48re slipping. The performance program also doesn't accelerate evenly, it feels like it just shuts down at times.

I won't even try the extreme because of how bad the truck handles the performance mode.Tow works okay and I can feel a small increase in power. I guess it is headed back this week for a reflash.

Sorry for the previous post. I also had a problem with this when I got my pup. It was a version 1.3 and when I talked to bullydog they had me send it in for a reflash. The pup I got back was a version 1.5. The first couple of times I downloaded the new pup the high idle feature was working automatically after the download. Then after a download it didn't. I called bullydog and they told me about the top left button. To get this to work you turn the key on, then plug in the downloader and at the very first screen where the bullydog logo appears you push the top left button. The bullydog will disappear and a screen comes on that says the function is complete please unplug and recycle key. When I did this the high idle started working again. Also it is important to note that this feature only works in nuetral or park and that it will not work with your foot on the brake.

I know how the feature works because I had to negotiate it into the price of the truck when I bought it. I had it until I downloaded the power pup. When I called them they didn't know what was going on, then later they left a message on my cell phone. I was told that you needed to go into the downloader part of the power pup, then when you had the download options, i.e. tow, performance, etc, and then you press the left arrow. I did that and the screen did change to indicate the function was enabled. It didn't change the truck though.

I was able to cool my EGT's though.....

I downloaded the stock program from the downloader and then sent it back to Bully Dog to be reprogrammed. I noticed that the EGT's on the truck are about 100 degrees cooler. I think that Bully Dog has reflashed my truck to a 2003 program. It doesn't have the power it had before I downloaded the power pup. I suspect that because the downloader is made for 2003-2004.5 trucks, it makes the 2003 truck the stock download.

High Idle Control is free...just have to turn it on with the DRB on a stock truck.

Was it hard to negotiate a free feature into the price of the truck?

Believe it or not....yes it was hard! I asked to have it turned on when I bought the truck. The diesel mechanic was not working the day I went to pick up the truck. The salesman said he would write me out the "IOU" for the service. I told him I would just come back, but he insisted. Luckily...because when I returned the service department tried to charge me $40 for the labor to download it and enable it. When they were BSing me they told me it took 45 minutes to do the work. After it turned out that it was a freebie...I went into the waiting room, poured myself a coffee, and had just sat down when I was told my truck was all set.

I've said it before, when I go to the dealer I keep my hand on my wallet...

The latest was when I asked for a fuel filter and they wanted to charge me $45
