Aurora 2000 really helps a stocker!

I put it on this AM and made a couple of trips to a rental store. I wouldn't have guessed the stock turbo is such a POS! I put on 4" except for the downpipe a few weeks ago and that dropped the egt a lot. Compared to the stock turbo, my time from 55 - 80 mph dropped 2.5 seconds and power is very noticeably stronger and smoother - it doesn't drop dead at the top end now. EGT is 50* higher but the ambient is 22* hotter than when I timed the same run with the stock turbo. The filter minder barely increased with the Aurora - it's still at about 65%. So far, no barking at all, but I wasn't really hot-rodding the 6 spd. Cruising boost is a couple psi lower and initial spooling is a little slower but it makes up for it after a couple of seconds. I compared the slots in the Aurora turbine to the slots a HX 35/14 turbine I have and I'm guessing the Aurora turbine is about 16 sq.cm but the Aurora is WAY less laggy than a Hx35/16. I hear a little turbo whistle when I'm hitting it hard and the rpm and boost get up there and a lot more deep, rumbling exhaust tone. I'm doing all the air mods because with my usual luck, I'd have problems with a box. I just want more for towing and I think I got what I want. Craig

Yes, but the ambient was 22* higher when I timed the run with the Aurora. Craig

No, I'm saving that for the last thing. I've read a lot about problems after doing fuel mods and occasional warranty fubars. I just want better towing and I think this turbo is going to be excellent - it's already an impressive improvement unloaded. Craig

Craig, What you really need and very soon is a real air intake or at least put a 4inch hole in the stock box and a flex pipe forward. The filter minder should be at 0... at 65 its new filter time. I wouldn't run a new turbo with a restricted intake if you like your turbo shaft. Get out in the driveway Now! and cut that hole. ks

I holesawed a few small holes. I'll try a 4" tomorrow. I've been wanting to move the battery to the rear and make room for a big paper filter. Craig

Why don't you try a super BHAF?

I've thought about something like that - build a box for a bigger panel filter. I want to get the battery and relays out of the way then go thru my filter catalogs and find the biggest one that will fit. I might try using two round elements (end-to-end with the open ends in the center) and build a fitting to draw from the center. Craig

Be sure to go for the highest FLOW filter that will fit, not just the largest size - yes, there's a difference.

I chose the largest, best flowing filter(s) that will fit in the stock underhood package.

Yep, I used a big round element a couple years before someone called theirs a BHAF. I used an AF942M. It was a little bigger than the BHAF and had the highest flow due to the media it used. I just updated my sig. and added a pic. I wonder if the pic worked. Craig

My super BHAF will supply enough Cummins-spec airflow & filtration to support 650 HP and 1220 ft-lbs of torque, and incorporates the stock IAT and filter-minder... doesn't do much to quiet the turbo whistle, though!
