So I had my transmission rebuilt in Reno at a large trans shop - $1995 plus 300 for a heavy duty tc( supposedly). 2 year warranty.
It shifts great but does not lock up. I explained my discontent with the way the tc did not lock up. the owner gave me a bunch of flim flam talk about a lower stall speed and how heavy duty it was. It does not seem right.
Does my truck need a special torque converter to lock up? i want it to operate like it did from the factory. i really don't think it will last without the lockup - when towing in particular. Is a lockup converter very costly or just different from a standard tc? Is the lockup just a function of the computer commands? the owner ( Bill at A-1 Transmission in Reno) said he would change the tc if I didn't like it- promised satisfaction. i am hoping he will honor his offer. Also i now have a check engine light on my dash that won't clear.
any info guys? thanks.

Hopefully it works out for you, and you got a good deal.. but I can't help but thinking that you get what you pay for.

Thanks for the sentiment but that really doesn't address my questions. I don't need to be told i made a poor choice- just asking for help. Thanks

What kind of TC did he use? Have they ever re-built a 48RE?

Something ain't right. You can make a lock up switch for it, but it should lock up on it's on.

Take it out, put it in second, and accelerate normally, it should lock up in 2nd. If it does not, the ECM is not getting the correct signal from the tranny. I'm not a tranny expert, so I can't tell you what the tranny is looking for to lock up off the top of my head.

Dang it, man.

good torque conveters too.
I'll 2nd that on ATS!!! The only things that didn't need replacing on seperate occasions within 10K miles; case, shafts (billet input-2wd). In very beginning, vb went out within 200miles and ATS shipped out a replacement. Then toasted clutches (had BD's plain PMT) which ATS claimed that since I done the install of my own trans., they're only going to cover parts ONCE I ship the trans. back to them (round trip freight= $$$), anyone of their dealers/installers can NOT open up the trans. at all!! VB again (PMT-CL). Then toasted clutches again along with their conv. (TWIN TURBO'S//TNT-R)

I finally gave up and went with GOEREND's vb/conv. and had INGLEWOODTRANS. (btw, is an ATS DEALER/INSTALL) replace the clutches. Over a yr. now and STILL going strong without ANY problems....

So, to the op....I've been in your shoes trying to spend little as poss. and end up costing ALOT more than if I just went with GOEREND in the 1st place..

All that $$$$ could of went to alot of go fast goodies....

Diesel Performance Tranny for me, shifts like a son of a gun, somtimes too hard but she stays there and doesen't like to let go. Stall speed is much lower, tows my 5th wheel and loves it. I can actually spin the tires now and she puts it to the pavement like you would not believe. http://dieselperformance.com/
That the tranny you want, also install the Tow Loc, make sure you have a laptop to set it up.

A-1 ended up installing a new converter and valve body at no expense to me and the trans seems to be performing as it should. What an ordeal. i don't know how it will hold up with the towing yet- Springtime will tell when i tow the 5th wheel. For now I am back in business and didn't have to spend a fortune- I simply don't have the money right now for a high end trans.
thanks for everyones feedback.
