Anyone with aftermarket exhaust..

I have the MBRP turbo back exhaust and for about a week 1/2 or so I started hearing a strange humming or vibrating sound at idle and it wouldn't do it all the time. I could idle it up alittle and it would quit. When I had time to lay under the truck or it wasn't raining it didn't do it, was about to drive me crazy. well this morning when I got to the jobsite it was doing it, layed under there and found it. The exhaust for some reason had shifted closer to the frame at the muffler and one of the rubber hangers was touching the frame and was transfering the vibration of the exhaust. I guess when the temp was in the 30's the rubber was harder it would transfer the vibration to the frame more. Anyway not complaing about the exhaust, I love it, just wanted to let you guys know in case you get the same weird sound you'll know where to look LCH

Good Info

Ive had my MBRP on for about the same time and I have been searching and searching for that noise. Glad that you finaly narrowed it down, cause every time I go looking it would stop. Its been in the mid 30's for the last week here in St Louis and that would explain alot.

Thank's for the head's up. So can you just bend the hanger to fix it. I'm getting ready to do my MBRP system too.

Hey George. Do you live in St. Louis, or are you just visiting. I'm just across the river in Illinois. What part of St. Louis are you located.

We have two of these trucks for our buisness and the other truck didn't make the noise so I knew it wasn't normal. I got under there and looked but I was looking at the pipe, I never thought to look at the hangers, I'm sure everything was in place when we finished, I have no idea how it moved. We tightened the clamps with an impact LCH

Yes, I used a pry bar and put the tip of it on the end of the hanger (on the muffler) with the middle of the pry bar on the frame and flexed it right over. If you are doing turbo back it will help alot if you have someone to hold the down pipe in place from above while you put the band clamp around it, thats the only thing that was difficult the rest was easy. Another bit of advice, we tried to get the OEM exhaust off without cutting it, we soon abandoned that notion. A good sawsall with a metal blade will save you alot of time, just be sure to get a blade with the teeth close together, we tried one of those bi-metal blades with large teeth and it didn't last long on that stainless LOL...LCH

I didn't think it came with the band clamp's. Did you get those extra. I'm still waiting on my kit to get here so I really don't know what I'm getting. But, I thought the guy said it was not band clamp's. Guess I'll have to wait and see.

The "band" clamp I referred to is the OEM one where the exhaust connects to the turbo. You re-use it and all the rest are regular exhaust clamps and are provided. I guess it's not really a true band clamp because it's not flat, it's the shape of the flange where the two peices meet and prevents them from seperating.
Your right, the other bandclamps are an option if you think you will ever need the exhaust apart. I thought about it but didn't think I would need them...LCH

An update, the vibration was back this morning and the hanger wasn't touching the frame either. I just thought I fixed it yesterday. I got under there pushed on the exhaust and I could see it move at the connections. I got a hand ratchet and checked the clamps and they had loosened up They were tight. Well I went to tighten them and two of them broke right off with very little effort Had to go to a diesel shop to get more that big. The guy there said the broken ones were cheap. Anyway I tightened the new clamps down and they held and the vibration is gone again.
I feel alittle silly posting all that last night thinking I had fixed it and I really didn't. I guess we'll see this time...LCH

Update! So far since putting better clamps on and tightening them down tight I have no vibration noise. It's been in the 20's at night and upper 30's in the day and no vibration so the clamps must have fixed it. This is a great exhaust, they just need to supply heavier clamps even if they raise cost to cover them. When you spend $$ on a full system whats a couple more $ for some quality clamps? My two cents...LCH
