another exhaust question

I've been reading a lot of topics about everyone's exhaust setup. Some of you guys love it, while others says they have a few issues - such as drone.

I've got a 2003 SO regular cab 4x4 with 4:10 gears. The only performance mods I've done is an AFE ProGuard 7. But, I'm questioning the whole exhaust issue.

Is it really worth the money to replace the whole exhaust system to a 4"? Or would I feel just as much power increase by only replacing the muffler?

Either way, I want something that's QUIET because my RPM's are constantly running around 2500. Does having a quiet muffler take away from performance?

I've been looking at the setup offered by Diesel Power Products. they'd set me up with the Banks 4" drop down pipe that replaces the factory elbow and down pipe and then the remaining exhaust would be their 4" aluminum with muffler. I think this is a great setup, but just not sure if I'd feel much difference in this vs. just replacing the muffler.

What do you guys think?

yes you will get more torque the truck will breath easier and run smoother not to mention lower egts. just changing the muffler doesn't do as much. dont know about the banks though most of there product seem expensive. I dont have the link but mike D on here has one for a complete 4 inch exhaust for $300.00

hope this helps

The Banks drop down pipe replaces the factory cast elbow and down pipe. The factory cast elbow sits between the turbo and the down pipe as is also a restriction - not 4".

If I were to do a complete 4" system, I would want to replace everything that isn't 4" from the turbo (I hear the turbo outlet is 4"). Some exhausts are 4", but don't replace the cast factory elbow. And from what I've seen, Banks is the only one to do this - I may be wrong. And yes, they are expensive, but why spend as much as $300 bucks for a 4" system and not do anything about the smaller, restrictive cast elbow?

If as you say Floorman, just changing the muffler won't do much, I won't waste my money. If I'm going to do this, I want to do it right the first and only time.
How loud is the system from Mike D? No link?

hey schorb just looked up mike d and his exhaust issue seems he had a bad experience with rpm outlet .com so i guess the old saying is you get what you pay for. I took just the muffler and changed it on an older turbo diesel i had ( 98) and i didnt make much difference to me . but i am like you when i do change this one i want it to last and to be worth the money even if i have to pay alittle more

thanks for the info floorman! i just hope doing this exhaust will be money well spent.

if someone has the exhaust setup from diesel power products -http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/exhaust2
please let me know how you like it and how loud it is. when i called them, they were very helpful and would customize any way i wanted. i would just like an outsiders opinion.

but again, any other options for a "complete" 4 inch system would be appreciated.

Just an FYI The Stainless steal exhaust from Jegs looks like it replaces the 3.5inch elbow on the turbo as well (according to the pics. Price on it is 499

4" down pipe

As far as we know Banks is the only company offering a 4" down pipe that replaces the cast elbow exiting the turbo. This is one area that really does make a difference. The elbow starts out 4" at the turbo and turns and reduces to 3-1/2" at the down pipe connection. The Banks down pipe is worth doing even if it is not used with the Banks exhaust.

I agree with the Banks down pipe. And Diesel Power Products will integrate the Banks down pipe into their exhaust system if you like. I don't need a SS system, so opting for the DPP aluminum system with the Banks down pipe is the way I'm leaning right now.

Diesel Power Products also sells the Aeroturbine muffler that said to help quiet the exhaust and eliminate drone. This is used in conjunction with the muffler. Has anyone had any experience with this concept? Or is it like the Tornado gadget that guys can put in their intakes?

Their personal web site is - http://www.aero-turbine.com/index.html
It all looks like a great idea and that it would work, but you can make anything sound good with action words and cool pictures.
