Air Dog Noise
Air Dog Noise
I recently installed an Air Dog FP-100 and have been getting some noise that is strange. It sounds something like when sucking a drink using a straw and you pull the end of the straw out of the drink a bit. The sound is intermittent.
The pump runs smoothly and even when making the noise I can't feel any change in the way the pump is running when I place my hand on it. I have removed the air/water separator and oiled both sides of the gasket as recommended by Air Dog in the troubleshooting guide. I have also drained 2 to 3 quarts of fuel through the air/water separator and have not seen any air bubbles or anything to indicate there was air in the system.
Is it normal to hear a sound like this when the relieve valve sends the excess fuel/air back to the tank after the air is separated out?
TIA

Mine does it. I thought the pump was bad so i called and got another one sent. The new one does it too. I redid all the plumbing 2 times and had my tank off so many times i almost rubbed a hole in it. Finally i gave up and just live with it. Thats been a year ago. The general pump noise is loud though.
put mine on last week. Mine makes a "whine" sound seems to be random. Although may happen more when taking foot out of the pedal. Its so loud i can here it running down the road. any thoughts?
When I installed mine, I found that the bolts that was used to mount to the frame was not treaded long enough to properly tighten up. (My frame on the truck might be narrower than others.) You may can try making a rubber isolator between the mount and frame. I used an old mudflap cut down to the size of the mount and clamped it all together. Was able to space everything to have plenty of treads plus not have to worry about any harmonic vibrations singing in the frame rail.
Thanks for the replies guys. This helps set my mind at ease. My hearing is right at the point of needing hearing aids so if you guys say they are noisy they must be. If I can hear it humming and then intermittently the noise I tried to descibe it must really be loud.
I have some rubber material that I have considered putting between the mount and the frame and will probably do it once it quits raining (if ever).

I would try the rubber spacer, mine does not make any noise at all(i guess just lucky). I have to put my hands on the pump or filters to feel if its running. With saying that, I have seen other treads saying both the 100's and 150's make noise.

I read these threads over and over about FASS and Airdog making lots of noise. It makes me soooooooo glad I went with the Walbro kit from GDP back about 3 years ago....when they were so popular. I can't even hear mine run. I can feel it through the frame if I try. Im thinking about buying a spare walbro to keep in the glovebox.....in case my original ever fails.
Sorry you guys are having to go thru this. Best of luck getting some resolution.

Send AirDog a PM, he'll probly say you have air getting in, tell you to check all your hose connections etc.
Something musta changed at AD since I got mine which is very quiet, been a few complaints lately.

mine makes that straw sucking sound also. there is no change in FP and thats what the air/fuel seperator is for so i am not worried about it.
Just as a troubleshooting help, do you only hear it with <1/4 tank of fuel. Mine does it at full tank, i dont think its anything to worry about unless you see your FP drop.

I am considering replacing mine(Walbro), with something bigger, I have doubts that it is keeping up with my slightly modded CP3, injectors and TNT. I guess I should stop "guessing" and put a fuel pressure gauge on my system.
You won't be able to get a spare from GDP, Richard dropped them, He was no longer able to get his price break on that(392) single pump, without buying their whole line. I heard you can get them through one of the autoparts catalog(Jegs?), can't think of the name.

Lloyd Mills is carrying them according to his website. I haven't personally bought anything from Lloyd yet....but I hear good things. http://www.midatlanticdiesel.com/id15.html
My cp3 and injectors are still stock...but my walbro has plenty of FP. It usually runs about 19 psi. I haven't noticed it pulling down much....but that may change one day with enough demand.

I put the Air Dog on because the Walbro failed me. I had about 12,000 miles on my fuel filter when I changed the filter out. At that time I attempted to prime the filter and lo and behold the pump was not working. I have no idea how long I ran with the dead pump. I was grossing a bit over 19,000 lbs and my truck with just me and fuel weighs in at 8,000 lbs. I was in Idaho Falls when I found the problem and I hit NAPA and a couple of performance shops looking for a replacement. NAPA found one in a catalog but couldn't get it in for at least one day. I ended up buying a Holley Blue to get home and it lasted 30 days before it quit running. After I installed the AD my son wanted to pull the Holley apart and look at it, we put it back together and it started running again so something had jammed it up.
I don't think the AD is too noisy and it doesn't bother the wife who has excellent hearing. I just heard a sound that didn't fit and was wanting to know if others heard it also. Once I had the AD installed and did a test drive it felt like the truck accelerated smoother and ran better.
I was happy with the Walbro until I could not get a spare easily while away from home.
