2005 48re mods question

Hey guys,

I did some searching on mods for the '48 RE, but it seems that the 2005 model 48s are "different" In some way then the earlier ones, and, wont' work with some shift kits.

Any idea what the difference is, and, what the shift kits work with an '05?

I want to set the truck up to be making 100-150hp above stock pretty safe. I do not plan on a lot (if any) hard launches at all, no burnouts, and lots of power from a roll. So in other words, I won't abuse the thing, but I will drive it.

I have a converter picked out (brand not important, will just start a war). BUT:

What other mods could I do, short of changing any of the shafts on the 48, or anything really major. But if its time to upgrade some clutches and or bushings/bands, now will be the time. I just don't want to go ahead with the work and do a "wrong" mod for my 2005 that will give me major issues.

Further in the future I will get a new, built tranny, but not for now.

I think with some trans/converter mods, a booster holley fuel pump, and a bigger turbo perhaps, 100-150hp could be used with some safety/confidence.

So far about 30,000 miles on it, many with edge juice/attiude used in a pretty smart way, no problems yet, however the stock converter can be slipped pretty easy now.

Im runnin 402HP at the rear wheels and my trans seems to be doin pretty well. No issues so far.

OK....

I have been to hell and back with my 05 on these shiftkits and valvebodies.......I started trying a Dunrite valvebuddy kit since I can do my own work......BIG MISTAKE trying his kit. He told me his kit would work great on an 05. Well IT didnt!!!! It had a major 2-3 flare and alot of shuttle shifting. Long story short I ended up frying my direct clutches at only 3500 miles!!! He couldnt figure out why it didnt work so I gave up. I found out he hasnt done any research and development since the 47re on this kit!!! So I gave up on his kit.

I then tried a suncoast valvebody. I shifted really harsh and had major shuttle shifting issues......as well as they pretty much use a stock valvebody and just crank up the pressure a little bit. so I sent that back.


Then I got lucky and read a post about HTS. I called Dusty at HTS and he set me up with one of his valvebodies. since he actually has an 05 he has tried and tested all his products. The biggest problem with the 05's is the electronic throttle valve actuator. Nobody has played with it. They all just asume that it works like the cable did. Well HTS relized there were issues treating it like a cable and has made some changes. I have had some small issues and Dusty has helped me out big time. He has even sent me free parts to make adjusments and called out of the blue just to say hi and see how things are working. Its the best customer service I have ever recieved. I am actually running 200hp on only the HTS racing high pressure valvebody, Dunrite triple disk, and a HTS Laminated flexplate(wich I havn't intalled yet)

If you use it as a daily driver with these mods and dont do 20psi launches this should get you by until you can do the full out build. this is exactly what im doing for now. My juice/attitude shows no slippage even at 150- 200hp and i rod on it all the time!!! Just beware that all the big comapanies say there stuff works fine on an 05 but ive fount different.......

so to recap you need:

1)high pressure valve body

2)single or triple tc

3)flexplate

THANKS on the valvebody/shift kit info, I am running a tripple disk converter, and was looking for a good flex plate.

Anyone else with an '05 and problems/succsess.

Anyone have any experience with DTT parts in their '05s?

Is a billet input shaft needed for 450 hp truck? No pulling just some towing and maybe some soft launches for racing. Wes

Ive done a load of research on the tranny in the 05. I have talked to HTS he seems like a great guy and would recomend to anyone. I myself have gone the route of DTT full tranny. I am planning some high horse mods though. Seems everyone in the tranny industry agrees if you stay on or around the 450 hp mark and dont do the startiugn line dance you will be ok with the tc, valvebody and if you want the flexplate (stock is bad on the 05). God luck with whom ever you go with there are alot of good places to go to

The stock transmissions will not live under power upgrades. You may think they are because you don't see whats going on inside. Mine was rebuild at 13k, full DTT. The thrust washers looked terrible and my reverse band showed a lot of black. Yes, I had a box, but for only four months or so and I didn't turn it up high. I have learned the hard way before, not this time. Done right the first time!!!! You can do this and that to save money until you decide to add more power later. Then, you'll be right back where you are now, starting over. Good luck...

not much differant in the vb mostly larger passeges and such but the trans itself it basically the same just slight changes. I would like to know why the kit would not work in the 48 but is ok in the 47. I do them all the same with good results. I am betting the line pressure was not set good or it had leakage.

I think its something to do with the pressure transducer having issues when it sees any line pressure higher then stock. I don't think the sensor/programming or whatever is setup right to work with increased line pressure, but I could be all wrong.

I ordered a HTS vb, lets see what it does.

I have a gorend brothers torque converter and valve body in my 05, it works great. Dave has it figured out, something to do with a custom machined valve. mine works great! i also have a cool lock up switch that i added myself, it locks with the push of a button and unlocks with the brake pedal.

ats has electronics to fool the ecm for more line pressure. all of the trannys that have the electronic gov have that problem not just the new ones. I do know what your refering to however . causes the fast upshifts, second gear starts are also common.
