Im running Moto Metal 951's with 285/65/18 Nitto Dune Grapplers with no leveling kit on my 03 4x4 and have never experienced any type of rubbing. Going off road or sharp turns my tires have never rubbed. I have purchased a leveling kit but havent installed it yet due to the lack of free time
With a 35" tire I would expect rubbing even with a leveling kit and using 4.5 bs of wheels. I wish I had a good pic for ya but I dont, the wheels do stick out a little further than stock but I get compliments all the time. Id also like to thank 06ctd for the moto's.

I have been trying to remember your user name for the life of me, but couldn't remember. I knew you put 285's on 9" wheels with 4.5" backspacing and thought you may be able to give him a picture or some advice.

Yep, he should have no issues at all. With 285/65/18's you can get by easily with no leveling kit. When I was tire shopping I considered the BFG's and Nittos. I went with the Dune grapplers and one of my friends bought the Terra Grapplers and my dune grapplers have gotten alot better tread life. Nitto now has the Dura Grappler out in some 18 in sizes if you would want to go with a highway tire.

I couldn't get 33" Nitto's on Moto Metal 951's to fit even with a leveling kit and not have rubbing. It took 5" and then I had to go up to a 35" tall tire and it barely missed rubbing then. I guess some trucks are just different for some reasons. Who knows....

That's right the ATS flares would look a little silly with narrow wheels/tires, but if he runs the wheel with 5.25" backspacing on a 12.5" wide tire or so, it would look fine in my opinion. My 9" wide wheels have 5" of backspacing and the tires sit level with the flares (if not just a hair outside of them) and it looks great.
from most of my buddies with 3rd gens, i've found most of them were able to fit 33's on wheels with 4.5" b/s with no rubbing. the issues usually start (not that i know this from personal experience or anything ) when you try to run a 35 on that same wheel, with less than 6" of lift. i wasn't even close to making it work with 3 1/2" of lift. with a 17x8.5 wheel, with 5" b/s, i get no rubbing and the ats flares line up almost perfectly with the tires.

Hmmm. Guess I am the unusual one then.
