Is it possable to switch out the stock turbo on the 03-04 with the later 04.5 up models? I know the later ones used electronic wast gates but could you take that off and and just use a mechanical one like the earlier models used? I thought I read about doing this on here and I cant find it Thanks for the help

I don't think it could be done being the wastegate is controlled electronically and I don't think the 03-04s would comply with it. This is IMO.

 

I used a turbo off my 05 for a couple of weeks on my 03. I didn't worry about the wast gate.

Even if it would work, I don't think the benefit gained wouldnt be enought to justify the cost. Aftermarket would be a better choice. Just my .02

 

03-04 stock turbo 54mm 455 HP Max

04.5+ stock turbo 60mm. 520 HP Max

Only thing required is a different exhaust elbow as the 03/04 are 3.5" and 04.5+ are 4".

No need to touch the wastegate, it works fine as is without modification for 26-28 psi. If you want big boost and power, splice in a boost elbow, wastegate controller, pinch the line with vice grips, or disconnect from wastegate head and plug the silicone line with plug/screw and hose clamp.


The electronic component is simply an electric bleeder valve. When energized it bleeds boosted air out of the silicone tube to prevent boost pressure from filling the wastegate head/extending rod/ opening internal exhaust bypass puck.

Stock 04.5+ trucks activate the electronic solenoid for a few seconds to allow boost to spike to 31-32 psi and then turn off allowing full boost to work on the wastegate head and fully open the exhaust bypass puck.
