What causes this?

So my dads hot shot truck is a 5.9 2007 with 96,000 on the clock he takes it in becuase the check engine light is on. they tell him that some of the injectors are bad, but they will fix it under warranty. The next day the dealership calls and says that his exhuast manifold and his turbo housing are cracked. does anyone know what will cause these to crack.

Heat can do that and there was a time when the exhaust manifold was a problem. Others will post more detailed information as I never had that issue but I know others did. The driveability of the truck must not have been real good with a cracked housing and bad injectors...he should be pleased when he gets it back.

Ahhh, Yeap that would cause his issue of one bad turbo and a cracked manifold. Excessive heat will kill a manifold and turbo because of not letting it cool properly.

Been there, done that with my 04.5/5.9L. CAT was clogging up @ approx. 120k miles and then clogged completely. Truck seemed to lose power gradually over a period of time, barely noticeable. When it did get to being noticeable, I started changing fuel filters, putting fuel additives in, thinking it was bad fuel or something. When the CAT finally clogged completely, truck would hardly move. I was towing a trailer and I finally connected the symptoms with an incident I had with my 02 7.3L F350. The CAT clogged on it too. Punched holes in exhaust prior to CAT and was able to get home. Well, did the same on the 04.5 RAM and PRESTO, got enough power to get home. Of course the exhaust manifold was toast and the excessive heat cracked the turbo housing, right where the turbo hooks up to it. Had taken it to Cummins in Hubbard, OH and they used some special light to see the crack. Never heard any exhaust leak with the crack.

Forgot!! What really ticked me off about this is, the Ferd gave me an error code of Excessive Boost/Back Pressure and helped me quickly nail down the problem since I was in Quebec City about 400 miles from the border!! The Dodge never threw a code cause it didn't have a code programmed for that.
