water in fuel

Apparently I have gotten some bad fuel. Warning light came on a few days ago.
I have drained the filter a half dozen times....can't get it to go off.

I am changing the filter tomorrow.

Anybody know of a good additive that will get the water out of the fuel?

Are you sure the sensor is not bad? I have seen it on other models of trucks a lot. Also check the plug connector make sure it's clean and dry. I have hard time believing u have that much water.

It can happen. I stopped at a Mobil station on a run and a mile down the highway started with the alarms. In the trailer I had a 12 gallon pale which I used so a cop didn't screw with me. It was over 4 gallons after draining and using a hose down the fill neck. Mobil and I had a few words. Had a heck of a time finding replacement filters for it in the middle on no where. (2 spares of each in the back on trips now.)

Almost for got:
don't forget to get something that kills algae. If there some water left there it can promote growth in time. Catch it now instead of fighting it later.

I will definitely check the plug when I change the filter...not sure I know how to check the sensor itself. Suppose I could with a multimeter if I knew what to look for.

I had the thing work correctly a year or so ago. Drained the filter...saw a tiny bit of water...no problems till this one.

Yep....alway carry a spare fuel filter.
I want to get better filtration soon but gotta save the pennies.

Drain some in a jar. I extended my drain hose down low, so just do that and catch some. Let it sit for an hour. If it has water, you'll see it, and then you'll know which way to go.

Changed out the filter and that cleared it for now. Still did not see evidence of water. Possible that the connector was not plugged in well.

sometimes moisture in the connector is enough to set off light.

1mathom1:

You asked about additives to remove water. I would recommend "Stanadyne"
Performance Formula that you can buy at most Cummins or diesel repair shops. I have used it for over ten years now and it works well.

Hey John, I bought another old Cummins - a 96 2500 4WD to help me move to Alabama. Water in fuel light hasn't come on, but it acts like it might have water. It sat for six months in central Florida.

Gary:

Hey buddy,...it is great to hear from you!

Even though the diesel fuel has been in the tank that long you can still add the additive Gary. It isn't going to hurt anything. I would drain some of the fuel out, let it sit for a few hours and you will know then if there is any water in it.

Thanks John! I've been super busy getting my Florida place ready to sell and my Alabama place ready to live in. Sure didn't need the transmission failure I had en route last month that set me back two grand on my 93 that I'm selling!

Dang Gary,.....sorry to hear that buddy. Glad to hear you are still driving Dodge Diesels though.

I guess your old "buddy" Brian Slager, whom we now refer to as "BS" is going to miss you not being in Fla. anymore huh? Lets see if he can get my post here "edited" or removed!

Anyway,.....good luck at your new home in Alabama Gary.
