They will get the programming fined tuned and the mileage back up. It is just going to take time and learning. Coming from a Nissan world electronics scare the bejesus out of mediocar techs. Not alot can handle it and the shade tree mechanic time is about over for the diesels. All the electronics are very similar to gassers with a few extras to handle regening parameters. Duramax's are nice but they want way to much money for them and I prefer an I-6. Always have, always will.

Not that I'm looking to get my 5.9 rebuilt anytime soon (only 56K miles on it), but what does it cost for a reputable shop to rebuild a 5.9 when, or if, I ever needed it done?

That's not something I'd do myself - I might change an injector or water pump or something like that, but no complete rebuilds for me - I know my limitations. Both technical and patience wise...

remember the Toyota trucks from the 1980s? truck will be gone before the motor ever needs touched.

wish I had a more specific answer for you, but what I said holds true. I will ask my contact at Cummins Bridgeway what the going rate is next time we talk.

Good job on this...have to applaud your patience.

Truth is with any new technology, there's bound to be a few out there that just aren't right. The thing that really gets me with your situation is the brake light circuit - really, how complicated could this have been? Plus the fact it's a safety item and illegal to drive, you would think the dealer would have been on this until they were certain it was right.

Good luck in your search for a new rig...

it wouldn't have any brake lights today had a member here not told me to have them bend the crap out of the switch bracket. the service manager stood behind the truck, watched me hit the brakes, said he didn't see the brake lights illuminate but this was normal. I explained I am an inspection technician in PA and would have to fail the truck next time I inspected it. in some states the MIL would have caused it to fail as well. simple mechanical failure that required the simplest fix.

I would have liked for them to inspected it with no brake lights then called the state auditor in and had someone's license revoked over it.

I guess its just luck of the draw with the new engine. I have a 6.7L with 21000 miles on it and the only problem I have ran across is re-flashes. I probably just screwed myself with that last sentence. It sucks to hear about your truck but glad to hear they took care of it.

That's Normal, eh - you suppose he would have said that if he were driving the truck?

Good job on finding the new rig - hope it works out better for you.

Congrats. Too bad you had to go through all that.
A lot of us are lucky to have purchased well running 6.7's. I would hate to go through all the hassles you did and the hassle of buying a truck again. I also would not feel good going backward in technology to a 5.9. Good Luck!!
