Unique Torque Converter Upgrade Opportunity

Finally got home and have been able to get to my prefered dealership to track down a vibration. Went for a test drive with the head diesel tech and he thinks that the torque converter is cause of the vibration at 70+ by the way the vibe pulsates. After explaining all the symptoms and what does and does not affect it, that is his decision. They are going to do a little more testing and get back to me. He said that there was a bad batch of converters where they delaminated- I'm not exactly sure what that means in greater detail. He thinks that I may have one of those in mine which explains the unique vibration issue.

If they do find it to be the torque converter, should I opt to have them install an aftermarket TC? (The tech is really cool- deleted DPF and tuner). So I'm sure he would be ok with using whatever I gave him. What I mean by that is the tech would be cool if I gave him an aftermarket TC and he would still do the labor UNDER WARRANTY it would just be the aftermarket TC going in not the factory one.

Please let me know what your thoughts are. I tow 15k freqeuntly on weekenks and having firmer shifts and less slippage would be better all-around. It's in the shop now so time is somewhat important.

Thanks

Does yours Do this? I have a 'pulsing' vibration, too. It's smooth for 2 sec. fades in vib. & fades out vib. for about 1 sec. then it's smooth again. Repeat, repeat, repeat. @ about 68-70. Fill in your signature so we know what veh. were talking about. When my TC went out on my '06 for the 5th time the tech said pic the converter & pay the difference. Well, then the serv. man. called Chrysler & they said "we will cover labor but $0 for an aftermarket TC". It's worth a try!

Yes, that's what mine does. Although it is apparent from 68 and up. It is really bad when towing. I would estimate it is 5 times worse when pulling 15k vs unloaded

Thats the same deal I'm hoping to get with the dealership.

Best case senario- During the warranty install of the TC I give the tech the aftermarket TC he gives me the factory new one, I sell the factory one and use that money to offset the aftermarket TC. It's a longshot but you never know!

I meant it starts @ about 68-70 & continues from there.

Gotcha. I'll let you know how it turns out when they solve the issue, it might be the same solution for your truck. Sounds like the same exact symptoms.

This seems like a good deal. One question I have is, what if in a few months the after market part fails? Will the dealer warranty the repair?

No. Your on your own but the maker of the TC will have a better warranty than Dodge does.

Have you figured this out yet?

The dealership put in a factory torque converter under my extended warranty. Unfortunately it didn't fix the problem.

Vibe is still there. It's going back to the shop in a week. I'll keep you posted. Also, a bunch of others are having the same issue and one even has an '06 with a manual transmission?

I have a hunch it might be coming from the diff- possibly the limited slip, twisted axle shaft, bearing or something like that. Either that or its a transmission thing.
