Trouble Starting

Friend of mine called to ask why when starting his 07 6.7 it would just crank and crank and never start until he cycled the key a few times. Dealer told him they could find nothing wrong. I told him to get a new truck and let the dealer eat that one. Too much money in that truck to be having problems with it already. Im a 12V guy so go easy on me, but let me know if I can guide him in any specific direction. Thanks.

Mine has done it twice now. Really freaks me out/pisses me off. I just turn the key off and sit for like 30 seconds and works. If it happened more often Id look into it.

i think i read about this happening a few times to some ppl and it ended up being the "sentry" security key deal. THe keys to these trucks have to be programmed to the specific truck.

I've had that problem, at first it was thought to be the key. (it was once) It happened a few more times then started dieing while running. It didn't set a code for a while, then it set a hard code. ETC, Electronic throttle control. It was checked out and the electronic throttle valve, not sensor, was replaced. I've had no problems since. This is on a Cab and Chassis, not a Pickup model.

The tech at my local dealer said that unless the temps are down low enough to kick on the glow plugs, don't wait when you turn on the key. Just stick the key in and start cranking. It has improved the starting of mine. If someone has anymore info on this I'd sure like to hear it. The tech seems to be a reasonably intelligent guy, but he is only human.

I don't think so. The Cummins doesn't have "glow plugs".

Mine has done it three times. Once with about 1000 miles, then 6500, last 9000 miles. It has finally started each time. Some said take the key in and out and try it again. I have not had it happen again. 10,500 miles now.

ok.. i've had this happen to my truck before also.. One thing that i started to notice and now look for if it doesnt fire on the first turn of the key is the ETC light. Its a Red Lightning bolt on the cluster. Look for that light if the truck doesnt start.. Wait for it to turn off before trying to start again.. should take 30 seconds or less for it to turn off.... THEN try to start the truck.. Should fire right up.. at least it works for me

also, i'm going to guess that your truck is doing this after you've driven it.. and then stop somewhere and turn the truck off for a short time and then go to fire it back up... I guess it has something to do with that also.. since it was only between short shut down/refire times that it didnt want to start for me.
