Trouble starting

Have a 1995 RAM 3500 diesal dually, had trouble starting and changed out the starter. Now, the gauges won't work, pre-heaters won't come on, NO A/C, alternator won't charge and air intake solenide won't energize on startup. Had the alternator tested it is ok. Could this be the computer, a ground? Please help.

Re:Trouble starting

This is going to sound dumb, but, did you make sure all the wires that came off the starter went back on? Kinda sounds like a wire was forgotten. Maybe someone else will chime in with "better" advice?

Re:Trouble starting

I'm guessing you took the + cable off both batteries to change the starter. There are several wires connected to the driver side battery + terminal, check to make sure they all got back on including the one to the power distribution box next to it.

Re:Trouble starting

From your symptoms I presume you have the automatic transmission. Given that you put all the wires back that you removed, I would buy a simple ground strap and connect one end to the engine block and the other to the body. Just scrape all the paint clear and use some dielectric grease on the connections before you bolt the new strap down. I would bet this solves your problem.

The Dodges have a nightmare with the OEM ground system, and most electrical failures can be traced to a bad engine to cab ground. I suspect the paint on the new starter isolated your ground enough to cause the problems.

Re:Trouble starting

I agree with the bad ground theory. I had a similiar problem with my GMC. Cleaned all ground cables and connection points, used di-electric grease, added a ground from heater core to block, and this corrected tmy electical problem. Good luck, let us know what you find, Kevin

Re:Trouble starting

would a bad ground also keep the starter from working - mine just clicks for about 10 attempts then finally starts. Thanks

Re:Trouble starting

pat h sounds like yours could be ground or dirty terminal or the starter silenoid. i would start at the battery if it was me .if none of those reveal it then get the whole system checked out from the key to the syarter,

Pat H,
Sounds like your starter contacts are worn. Search the archives for "starter contacts" for more info than you will want to read.
