A 3500 is rated at 12300 GVWR and 23000 GCWR and can tow 16400, that's what dodge's website says.

towing

My average load will just come in under 20,000 pounds which will put me at just under 26,000 pounds total. I see duallys do this all day long. Now isnt this illegal??? I know u need a CDL for over 26,000 pounds but if this truck is only at 22-23,000 gcwr i will be towing illegally like everyone else???? I need a vehicle that will do this legally!!!! Please help, im really confused now Im starting a car tote biz and the trailer will be 7000 pounds by itself. Which means a 3-4 car trailer i will legally only allowed to put 2 on it?? Gosh im confused? Please help? im about to put everything on hold now till I get this figured out

Yes you would be over the legal weight for a 3500. What you need is the new 2008 4500 to tow that much. You need a CDL for anything over 13000 pounds, AND a DOT number!

They will do it. It has nothing to do with the factory tow ratings. Your licensing requirements go by the GVW of the truck plus the GVW of the trailer. So if you got a Dodge dually with a 12,200lb GVW and a three or four car trailer with a GVW of 21,000 lbs you are over the 26k level and need a CDL as well as a lot of other stuff. It doesn't matter if you truck and trailers GVW add up to over 26k but your actual loaded weight is under 26K, you are still into CDL teritory. Here is a good site that will explain it all for you........

That said, unless you really have some trucking experience you'll have a hard time making a go of it. You do you plan to haul for? I haul only for myself(I am a dealer) and I see a lot of guys fail because they don't know much about the hauling business and you really can't turn a profit with a 3-4 car trailer. I just had a guy haul a Chrysler Crossfire to me from Chicago and I am 70 mi. west of St.Louis and he charged me $115. He was using a big truck, and I think he dumped the rest of his load in St.louis but I wouldn't hardly get off the interstate to get to my store for $115 more less come all the way from Chicago. Car hauling is just like selling cars, it is one of the most cut throat, low margin business you could get into.

Thanks for the help on the cdl issue, i guess u cant get in trouble the being over 23000 pounds then, I guess i will get my CDL this month. Now as for making a profit, i have done my research and i have made a pricelist and if i were to do auction work, they pay avg 95 cpm per car. I plan to round trip tampa to houston once a week and then stay local a couple days a week. i understand there is alot of overhead but still clearly enough profit. Only reason im starting with a smmallllll truck like this dually is to see if i like it and understand the biz, then in a year I plan on getting 1 of those 100,000 dollar fords!!!!!!!!! Even if I were to bill 10 grand a month, your overhead is only 5 grand per month off that 10 grand. And thats hardly working. Also note I would have 30 grand in capital to start. Note also that 5 grand includes 800 buck truck payment and 750 buck loan payment! I currently have another biz going in auto induestry but not in transport. I think there is plenty of money to be made as long as its managed right. Please anybody tell me if im wrong
