Tire Pressure Question
Tire Pressure Question
What pressure are you guys running in your tires when not towing? I'm running 65 lbs in all 4 tires. The only extra weight is the fifth wheel hitch in the bed. Can I run lower pressures in order to improve the ride without compromising wear? (BTW, I run 80 lbs rear, 70 lbs front when towing my fiver, est weight about 12k). Thanks in advance...

Do you have the TPMS on your truck? If you do all this is going to do is lite a light on the dash when you run your tires at a lower pressure.
I run my front tires at 60 PSI all year . The rear tires are at 80 in the summer when pulling my 5er. I reset the air pressure to 45 PSI in the rear when I am not towing my 5er.
My reset button in the truck will not accept the lower air pressure of 45PSI on the rear tires, so my idiot light is on.
Will not go back to the dealer, since I am my own warranty station after my deletes.
Thanks to Ford and Firestone for this great feature on our trucks. Nice Job 1.

I have not seen any abnormal wear from running the tires at a lower air pressure. I do rotate my tires every 5K miles, and check my air pressure monthly.
By the way my right leg is stronger then my left leg from the additional exercise in kicking the rear tires off of the hub every 5K.

65 psi in the front. 40-45 psi in the rear when empty, 50-65 in the rear when hauling or towing...depends on the load and/or what I'm towing. I've found that higher pressures in the rear when empty just take the centers out of the tire tread. I rotate the tire at every oil change.
The factory original BFG's on my truck have over 40k on them and still have considerable tread left.
As for the TPMS, you just have to learn how to work with it. I have no warning light issues.

Thanks, all. I appreciate your suggestions. I'll immediately lower the pressures tomorrow morning (when they're cold). If maintaining higher pressures equates to longer tread life I'd trade off the rougher ride for longer life but I see, according to most of you that I can run lower pressures without accelerating tread wear. Thanks again...
(BTW, my truck doesn't have the TPMS system)
