Timer shut down
Timer shut down
I am new to the diesel world because I bought a used 2006 5.9 CTD Quad Cab 2500 and I expect to learn a lot from this forum.
Having read that I need to run the CTD for 5 minutes after doing hard towing ( 2003 Jeep Rubicon on a trailer). Rather than sit in the truck ideling and wait 5 minutes before I go into a resturant for a sandwich and cup of coffee I would like to get a "engine shut down timer". I want just the timer and not have to buy any extra "magic boxes".
Does such a product exsist???

You don't really have to sit for 5 minutes. Assuming you have a plan for stopping, your turbo will be cooling as you ease into your shutdown spot. An EGT gauge will give you a better idea of turbo temp.
Yes there is such a thing. Here is one from Geno's Garage http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo....r=DTLS-DC3/ERT
I had one from this manufacturer on my 2002 Ford PSD and it worked great. Welcome to the DTR.

OK guys I'm back. Geno's Garage has a cool down timer (unknown brand) for $225.24 and I can get a BD timer for $147.95. Is the one that Geno's is selling worth the additional $77.29?
Does anyone know the difference??
Guys as I stated I am a newbie to the diesel world and have a lot to learn so please bear with me.
What is EGT (guage). I told you I am new :>)

EGT = Exhaust Gas Temperature. It tells how hot your turbo is. When you shut down while hot, oil is no longer flowing to lube bearings or cool the unit so the oil held in it begins to cook into coke. That plugs oil passageways and causes bearing failure. That's why you idle until it cools down. That's the reason for a gauge and for a timer.
As I said before, I've been happy with the BD timer. I bought it from Geno's. Price now is $129 US.

300* would be ideal but not practical for me. My truck will reach nearly 300 soon after start, at idle. I have the BD set at about 350 - 375 and feel that's adequate. Setting it lower makes it operate even on very short runs to the store, etc.

Interesting, I wait to shut down at 300* and never have to wait long. Of course I haven't had a chance to really work the truck that hard yet. Never fear, boating season is just around the corner, then I will get a chance.
Thanks for the info.
