Strange (?) CTD turbo sound

I've searched this forum for "turbo sound" and found nothing similar to my question.

What do you think of this new turbo sound? BTW my biggest problem is that I can't find an expert to talk to about this.

My '07 6.7 CTD started making a new turbo sound just after turning 37,000 miles. The sound is very similar to that made when draining an air compressor. This sound is heard when the exhaust brake (EB) is on and braking, and with heavy acceleration EB on or not. The sound is very loud on braking and can be heard over the radio.

Both Dodge dealers in Anchorage have worked on the problem and both have said that the sound is normal. If it is why could the sound not be heard for 37,000 miles?

I've driven 6 of the 6.7's. All of their turbos sound the same, a low blubbering rumble with a faint whistle. Not a gushing sound like I have now. And none of them make a turbo sound on acceleration.

On my way into Anchorage yesterday afternoon to pickup my 6.7 from the dealer I pulled away from a stop light next to a class 8 truck and his turbo spun up on acceleration with a loud whistle. It's not a new sound to me I just forgot about it. Could a loud sound from the turbo on acceleration be normal on the 6.7 too?

At the dealer I can only talk to the service writer, not the mechanic. Cummins Northwest in Anchorage said they would diagnose it for me at $135 an hour, one hour minimum. Before I take it to them I would like to hear what others think.

Thank you,
Doug

Check your air cleaner and intake plus inner cooler connections. Good luck.

sounds like you could either have a loose or broken charge air pipe/hose. Or possibly could be a little gasket on the EGR transfer tube. Take off the big cover (4 8mm screws) and look at the v-clamps either side of the tube at the bypass valve and the EGR valve. Look for soot accumulation around these clamps. If there is any soot, then that is your sound, take it back to your dealer and pop then in the back of the head for missing it. Other than that I cant really think of a reason unless it being some sort of internal turbo failure
