cruise control- strange sound

I have an intermittent problem with my cruise control; towing or not I occaisionally hear a "chattering" when I set the cruise. I tried different speeds with no change, dont know where its coming from other than in front of me....possibly engine compartment or somewhere in the dash, I cant tell. Any ideas?

The next time you set the cruise, rest your foot on the accelerator pedal and see if the sounds stops. Mine will do it from time to time, and depending how loud I have the music turned up I can hear it too. I rest my foot on the accelerator and it quits. If that is what's causing your chattering noise, it's due to the pedal not actually being "wired" to throttle blade or a TPS of some sort since the accelerator is drive by wire in these trucks.

You say chattering... I referred to it as a soft ticking on mine. Same thing? If so, no one had any ideas for me when I posted it and, in fact, I don't think anyone else had the problem.

I took it to the dealer and they said it was all working normally. Go figure.

Mine did the same thing. The dealer said it was probably the vacuum pump that is used to operate the cruse control. I think it is mounted on the firewall.???!

I believe the cruise control is all computer controlled these days. Old cars used a vacum setting to run the cruise, but these vehicles are all electronic, so your dealer is probably making stuff up because he knows as much or less than you....

Joel,
NOT ALL IS ELECTRIC......!!and old (gasoline) autos used vacuum from the manifold cause it was free, diesels have no manifold vacuum so power brakes and Cruise control became a problem. I had to check it out myself, If you hadn't question my dealer I wouldn't have really known! I looked....The vacuum pump is located behind the battery on the passenger side, the vacuum line run across to the drivers side to the cruise control diaphram under the battery on the drivers side.....I got a good dealer I guess..... Or at least with the cruise control noise.......
