Cruise Control, Out of Control
Cruise Control, Out of Control
Anyone know the cure for the "self-adjusting" cruise control. I've had my truck for a year now, and the problem comes and goes. I set the cruise at 70 and 2-10 seconds later the pedal goes to the floor and speed builds rapidly. I know the Cummins likes to run, but I would like to have a little control. Thanks for any help.<br><br><br>

Hey TD. Welcome to the forum. I'll take a stab at your problem, and it's a WAG at that. I think the vent solenoid in your speed control servo is toast. Auto diesels have a vacuum pump to provide required vacuum for the speed control. The PCM controls the vacuum and vent solenoids to maintain a constant speed. The Service Manual indicates that the servo is not repairable and is replaced as an entire unit. Sorry, but that's about all I can offer. BTW, the servo is located under the battery tray, and I've read where acid works its way into the servo body and destroys it.

could be the same problem I had........ http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1999/18-02-99.htm this TS fixed all my problems i had including ones not lised like the cruise control...... the have a seperate one & you will probably want to go with this one.....http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1999/18-08-99.htm my truck used to go wayy faster than I set it & i would always stop it because it was out of control now it's perfect no variance at all ...... it's pretty amazing.... costs about $65 from the dealer.<br><br>DRecu!
Re:Cruise Control, Out of Control
I was having a similar problem with my 95. I found that the vaccum line had chaffed through. To get to it, youhave to remove the left side battery and it's tray. Then the vaccum line is right there. If you don't take out the battery and tray it is real bear to get at. My vac line had a couple of holes in it. Cheap fix!!
Re:Cruise Control, Out of Control
Before you replace the servo, unplug the connector at the servo and plug it back in. I know of one that it acted that way and it was just a bad connection. Try it first, it may save you some money and work.<br><br>Dan

Re:Cruise Control, Out of Control
There is a TSB out for batteries leaking acid onto the servo, causing holes in the vacuum lines and servo damage.Contact your local dealer, and have your charging system checked for overcharging. I saw one that boiled acid out onto the LF fender damaging the paint. I believe the TSB includes the servo, vacuum lines, and other parts to prevent further damage, but may not address the overcharging. OK, now I know whats wrong with my Cruise Control on my truck. I've been following this thread with great interest since my Cruise Control hasn't been working. I overfilled my battery some time ago and acid has run down the side. I looked where the servo is and found only alittle piece of tubing stuck on it. I'll have to get a new tubing, where does the other end of the tubing go?
Thanks,

HAROLD G,I don't see what year or mileage is on your truck,if you are in or out of warranty, but you can go to a local dealer and have them look up the TSB & install it yourself if you prefer. I believe the parts kit includes the vacuum line you are refering to ,a servo and a revised battery tray to prevent problems in the future. TGCTD
