stock truck smokes, is that normal?

Hey guys, newbie here. I haven't had my CTD very long and am new to diesels so I'll more than likely have a ton of newbie questions....the first one is my truck smokes quite a bit under heavy acceleration. Now if my truck had a chip or programmer on it I would think nothing of it, however mine is bone stock with 35,000 on it. My brother has an 05 with 100,000 on it an it never smoked until he put a programmer on it. So is it normal for a stock truck to smoke under acceleration?

What color is it? Are you sure the last owner did not down load something that is still in there?

Hey Camper Andy,
My truck is inferno red, and yes I'm positive it has never had anything installed on it. I bought it from a good friend of mine and he's also my next door neghibor, I know the history of this truck quite well.

Inferno Red! That's good but the question was pointed at the color of the smoke. Black, white or grey.

how many miles on the air filter??? I find that on a fresh filter, I hardly smoke...

When the filter starts to get more clogged, I get more smoke...

I run fleetguard filters in stock filter box and change them with every oil change at 7500 miles...

So yes, I do get some smoke under load... nothing to the extreme of a chipped truck though...

My $.02 worth,

Bryan

Air filter is a good place to start, you will also want to get a boost gauge to see how the turbo is doing.

With my edge set to stock I only get a puff of dark grey. With it set on 5 I get a cloud of black. In both cases it clears up in a second or two once the turbo spools.

How long does it blow smoke?

First off the filter has about 3500 miles on it, stock filter in stock box...solidly in the green.. The black smoke is fairly heavy and continues almost the whole time I'm accelerating. It certainly would appear I had the truck chipped on a fairly aggresive setting. Again I know for certain the truck has never been chipped and is not now. It appears to run perfectly fine (better than my hemi did). I'm getting about 17 mpg driving back and forth to work, it's mostly country roads and just a little in town. Gets about 18 to 19 on the hwy, and about 13 pulling my 5500 trailer.

Well the next step is gauges. See what the turbo is doing.

Check all of your intercooler boots and make sure one is not cracked or blown loose. I test drove a '01 that was at a dealer and completely stock and it smoked under any acceleration were the turbo should have built moderate boost. I stopped on the side of the road to make sure there were no issues and noticed the boot was blown off at the turbo side of the intercooler. I clamped it back down and the smoke cleared up under boost and the performance greatly increased.

Mine used too

When mine was stock it would smoke under moderate to heavy accel. I put the MPI twins, exhaust, and intake all at the same time and could only get a light haze with my best efforts and my temps dropped a lot. Then I put the smarty on it at level 7 and it smokes again but still less than stock. I think that the air flow is a little constricted on a stock truck. But I dont think anything was wrong with the truck before, I could hit around 30 psi before the twins it just smoked after 2k rpms. I dont think anything is wrong with your truck but I would get some gauges asap just for piece of mind.
