Smelling the regen??
Smelling the regen??
I don't have gauges yet that will indicate when a regen is taking place, but I think that I can smell it. The overhead mpg reading doesn't really show a drastic decrease unless I'm plowing or pulling. I have noticed a diesel exhaust smell in the cab of the truck when I really shouldn't...like when I'm sitting still somewhere...windows up...maybe like at a stop light, my mailbox, etc...with the wind blowing such that any exhaust smell should be carried away but it can be smelled in the cab. I wonder if I'm smelling the extra regen fuel being burned?
Has anybody had any experiece with the cab air intake filters that Geno's sells...like do they eliminate diesel exhaust odor...which would be nice when stuck behind a sloow moving bus? Do they reduce performance of the AC system by restricting air flow?

Yep, smells like being at an airport!! This is how I know I'm in regen. That was confirmed by walking past the exhaust while that was occuring. You could cook a burger 3 feet from the pipe!!!! At least these don't have that constant wierd smell the 3rd gen 5.9's had, that just wasn't right. My 6.7 has no smell until it goes into regen the it has that rich sweet smell.
Some engines under regen when they are cold will smoke alot. If you happen to breathe that in it will burn your eyes, throat, and nose. Just like a top fuel rail car. You will notice a higher exhaust temp and when the engine is hot it might smell like a swimming pool. That chlorine type smell. That is how I can tell if it is in a regen on semi's, that or just look at the light that has been installed.
okay,
i'm a newbie here but when you're in regen the catalitic conv. clean themselves up right? do the mpg overhead indicates higher in the 20s mps readings?(is that a sign?) also can white some come out too? i was having this issue when i was in illinois. it was cold and i had the engine idling a lot. do this have anything in common?
ty for any replies.

Yep
I thought i was the only one. I can smell it when I slow down or stop. The regen timing bothers me a little because most of my trips are 30+ miles and I don't smell regen when stopping on many of those trips. But when I pull up at a light during just a 2-3 mile errand the regen is smelling up the truck. I wish I could tell the truck when I was going to be running down the road for 20+ miles and it would start the regen.

More than likely it is being caused by the exhaust brake being engaged.
Next time you have thhis problem, just turn the brake off and give it a
few seconds and I bet i'll go away.

I'm also getting exhaust smell in the cab at stops. EB is off and no wind. The heater fan was on low. I'm going to go to recirculate air the next trip around town and hope that eliminates the smell.
