They are now epoxy'd in and also held in with pins. The new ones actually do help direct airflow and it is not recommended to remove them....

Pull all the crap out of the intake tube and get a better drop-in air filter or aftermarket intake system then your turbo will whistle louder...

I went to look at my turbo and my ring is there. I went to pry on it and it seems to be a very flimsy metal (aluminum) and it started to distort.

I stopped there and had a better look. it appears to be some sort of metal "snap ring" wedged into a groove holding it in. I tried to pry it out but could not budge it at all! actually broke the corner off a small screwdriver!!! ooops (I do have the propensity to break almost anything).

Got out the vac and recovered the metal chip! Whew!!!

So any ideas on how to remove the ring with out too much distortion? in case it is too much whistle (ya right!!!) any special tools required to acces the"snap ring"

What engine do you have? A 5.9 or 6.7. If you have a snap ring than you must have a 5.9 and yes you can remove the snap ring than the silener ring. A 6.7 is like others have said epoxy and pins holding them in. I have heard of a few guys saying that after they removed the ring they had a flat spot on hard take offs, becarefull.

You could drill holes in the bottom of the airbox. That's the only way that turbo is gonna sing like your HTT did. That or get an aftermarket intake.....
