After trying almost a year NO ONE, dealers included, has been able to grease the U-joint fitting that is supposedly located on the front drive shaft. Can somebody please tell me which end of the drive shaft the fitting is located? Everyone has been looking at the end that is closest to the front of the vehicle. Can it be that the fitting is at the OTHER END of the front drive shaft? Your answers, please.....

 

It is at the end closest to the transfer case. Do a search on this site, there is a thread with pictures. The best way to find it is to put the frontend up on jackstands and rotate the shaft til you see it, get a flashlight. It is not a regular grease-fitting, the fitting is flat, flush with the surface arround it. Looks more like a silver colored dot, no more than 3/16" in diameter. You will need a needle grease-fitting to grease it.

What may be happening is that most newer trucks & cars come with no grease fittings , this has been the case for coming on 20 yrs , depending on make & model .
The way is used to be and what many do for replacements , is get grease able u-joints , when the originals wear out , the fittings are on the joints , between the caps , close to the center , also , there have been in the past , a grease zirk for the 2 piece shafts & the manual trans , for the splined shaft on the front end [ of the single shafts , or the front of the rear shaft , double shafts ] where it slips in & out .
If your not getting this info from any service place , do not go there anymore , they do not know enough to work on your [ or any ] truck or car .

 

I agree, if the service manager at that dealership can't figure out where it is he has no business getting your business!

 

I just changed my oil tonight and looked for this fitting for a 1/2 a hour, still didn't find it yet. I'll try again this weekend and hope to get the job finshed.

 

I'm going to try another dealer soon (here in Hendersonville, NC). I think I'll eventually find a dealer that has techs who definitely know how to lube that joint. I'm also going to watch the operation and ask to see the actual tool they use. I have a feeling if I don't watch they can say they lubed the joint when they really didn't. I hate to sound so un-trusting but as I watched at the last dealer the tech proceeded to lube the ball joints and I had to tell him to stop. I wanted the special fitting lubed, NOT the ball joints! If I wasn't watching they would have billed me for a lube job I didn't want.
