Oil change indicator...

I was reading the owners manual and saw that we now have an indicator in the dash that will tell us when we should change our oil. Does anybody use this or does it wait too long, as in some GM vehicles I've owned, before it comes on?
In case nobody knows it, if you have the REC NAV system you can program it to tell you when to change your oil too. It is just based on mileage though unlike the aforementioned one which takes other variables into account.....

There is a oil change required message that is displayed in the overhead console. Most complaints about it say that comes on too often (like 2000-3000 miles). Mine has come on twice. First at 3550, which I changed at 4700 and then at 6300 (1600 miles ?!?), which I didn't change until 9300. It has not come on since (now at 12000).

The change interval can be reset per the directions in the owner's manual. I'm going by a 5000 mile change interval.

Mine just popped on at 4255 and I changed the oil just because I am going to be towing over 1K miles next week. I was going to change it anyway so no issues. Seems like everyone is having too short of intrervals.

Mine came on and was changed at roughly 2,500 and 7,000 miles, I've now got 9,000 miles on total. My understanding is that it takes your driving conditions into account and guesses when you should change it based on that. It doesn't actually test your oil or any such thing. Still I would rather do it too often than not often enough so I am just changing it whenever the message comes up.

Mine seems to come on at the same mileage no matter how it is driven - 7,500 miles. I use a 10k mile OCI so for 2,500 miles I just keep cancelling the oil change message.

To turn the oil change required message off, turn the key to the "on" position and pump the gas pedal to the floor and back 4 times in 10 seconds. You will hear a ding and the oil change required light will reset. Mine came on at 7500 miles. I am at 13000 miles now and haven't seen it since. I changed my oil at 2000 miles, 6000 miles, 10000 miles, and will again at 15000 miles and every 5000 miles thereafter. At 15000 miles i am also going from Delo CJ-4 oil to AmsOil 5w40 CJ-4 synthetic as I am a preferred customer.
