Unhappy New 2008 Dead in the Driveway..........

Well, sad to say that is the title of my first thread. My 12 days of enjoying my new truck ended Saturday morning when I started it up. The engine stumbled to life and felt like it was running on 4 cylinders or so. The check-engine light came on, so I shut her down. After collecting my thoughts, I tried to start it again, but it wouldn't even try to fire. I had the check-engine light on as well as the red fuel control light on the dash. So, I had it towed to the dealer. After almost a million miles of driving and never being left stranded, my new truck with 436 miles finally breaks the streak.

I got her back today, running, but I am a little disturbed about the diagnosis. They said the ecm had two stored codes: P0607 (ECM Internal Fault Code) and P0204 (#4 Circuit open). They said there were no tsb's on this issue. Before replacing the pcm, the updated the software to a newer program. That did it and she lit off as if nothing ever happened.

So good news is I have my baby back. Bad news is I am more than a little concerned that this won't be my last time with this problem. Any body have similar issues, or have any ideas about what the problem may be?

Well after I just started a thread on the 08. Anyway, doesn't sound too bad except your time and trouble. Keep us informed.

It could have been worse, that's for sure. ECM's shouldn't just lose their minds for no reason though. I am worried about the potential for a repeat.

George, I had the same thing happen to my 05 about 8 month's ago. Same symptoms and had to have it towed in. They called me the next day and said the ECM had lost 1/2 it's programming for no reason and they had reprogrammed it and it was fine. So far the truck has been fine since they did the reprogram on it. It is scary though that they had no idea what caused it to happen.

Did replacing the injector(s) solve the problem?

Yeah, this is scary to me. I hate unreliable equipment! I searched and found a post where a guy had very similar problems. After six or eight trpis to the dealer, they narrowed it down to the ECM or head gasket (internal wire short). The dealer was going to replace the head gasket, but the guy never reported back with results.

That is not possible.

Not the head gasket, its the rocker housing gasket with integrated injector pass through harness.

I don't have an 08 but I had a similar problem with mine. One morning when I started it, it sounded like 3 or 4 cylinders, blowing white smoke and loud. CEL came on. Mine didn't cut off. I kept the pedal down for about 2 minutes. I figured if it blew Dodge would fix it. Finally I shut it down. I tried it again in 30 minutes and it ran fine, but CEL still on. I called the dealer and took it in. They reflashed it and no problems since, with about 2000 miles of towing my 5'er (13K+). The code was P0471 Exhaust Pressure Sensor. Only other time it's been to the shop is the G30 recall and of course oil changes. Over half my mileage is towing the 5'er as that's why I bought the truck. I'd like to have better mileage, but I love the truck. It's got so much power.

Yes and they flashed the computer with some new updates on both. Guess the 5.9 is not flawless after all. I remember when every one was just as scared of the 03 Common rail 5.9 and its new features and few probs as they are of the 6.7 but I doubt that any one would admit it now.

I agree.

When 2003 came out, everyone was afraid of it (like the vp44 system was better

When 04.5 came out, everyone was screaming worse fuel economy, 3rd injection event, emissions crud

Now 07.5 comes out and its the same story, "I wish I had an 04.5".
