milage crashed!!!!

For some reasn my milage is getting worse than before. It seemed to have started the last time I towed my trailer. I was getting almost 11 MPG on the overhead and then all of a sudden it went down to less than 10, I blamed it on the wind. Around town it was getting 13.5-14 and now it is seeing about 12. The final straw was when my wife drove it about 250 miles and it was only getting about 14.5 when it was seeing almost 19 hwy!!! She always gets way better milage than me.

I have never gotten a check engine message. The oil was changed at 4000. It has about 5500 on it now. It has no power mods is running the stock air filter. the only thing different is the flatbed. I have a very hard time believing that it could cause such a drastic loss in economy. This is the 2nd flatbed I have had, my brother has one and my Dad has one and none of the others have seen such a loss.

Does anybody have any idea?? I don't know what flash I have. It has not seen a dealer since I bought it in January

My first idea is never, never believe the truck's computer. It's often referred to as the "overhead liar" for good reason. If you want, and what I'd do first, reset it at your next fill up and see if the numbers come back to what you're used to seeing. As far as a mechanical issue, if your fuel and air filters are not obstructed, it's probably just the liar.

I reset it at every fillup. I have hand calced it and it has been .3 off every time. I know it is just an indicator but I started going off of that so that is what I am going by till I can get some better #'s

Hmm, I saw a bit of a loss in mine when I hit about 4.5k, not sure what the deal was, it is getting better now. Seemed to occur right after the oil change and hang around about 1k miles. You said you added a flatbed and I would be willing to bet you took a bit of a hit for it. I am sure the flatbed out weighs the standard bed by a whole bunch. If I had to bet on the reduced MPG I would place my money on the new bed.

Could also be that you're stuck in a regen cycle that never completed. Regens will knock your mileage down and if you don't drive it enough to complete the cycle it will keep trying until it does complete.
Just a thought.

thought it might have been the case too which is why I waited for my wife to drive 250 miles round trip from Reno to SAcramento to make sure it was out of regen.

I iknow the flatbed will give some of a hit but on the 4 we have had this is the only one that you noticed any milage difference. I had one on my 99 my bro has one on his 98 and Dad has one on his 04 and you didnt notice a drop.

Chris... have you tried changing your fuel filter? Whenever my mileage drops, I change my filter just in case.

Have you changed where you fill up? My last fillup was in Stockton at a place I've never used, and my truck has been running a little rough ever since. I'm going to run this tank out and change my filter and hopefully that'll cure things.

Hey Rob,

I almost always get my fuel at the rainbow on Kitzke or at speedymart on goldenvalley. Both run lots of diesel cause they are cheaper

I will change out the filter this weekend and see. Just didn't think I would need to after only 5K but thinking back I did put some fuel in from an onsite tank a bit ago
