Magnefine ATF for 6.7

Looking to install the automatic tranny filter on the lines for my new 6.7 when it finally gets here. Wanted to put it on with low miles to try and catch most of the manufacturing debris. Does anyone know the correct size to fit in the return line for this truck. It is a 2007 3500 if that helps. I am guessing 1/2" but not sure as the truck is not here yet.

If the new 6 speed auto is any thing like the old 4 speed was then no way would I attempt to put an after market filter line filter on the transmission as by doing so it could cause some major problems. Unless Dodge OK’s this external filter being put on, if you were to ever have any problems it could void your transmission warranty. If you’re worried about break in debris or fine metal parts in the pan then just change out the filter after the first 3-5K and you will not have to worry about screwing up your warranty. If you want to check up on what I posted then PM Tim H as he is a very good trans re-build man.

My neighbor works for American Medical Response and they use the Magnefine on the entire fleet of ambulances. Prior to using the filter they had several transmission failures on the 4 speed autos. After the failures they started using the filters and have had very few transmission failures. This fact tells me that there is definately something to using these filters. What is the problem with using a non-restrictive filter on the return line from the cooler? All I can see is an improvement in filtration capability. Is there something that I am missing?

You should not put an inline filter on the new 68RFE. The 68RFE transmission already has two filters. a main sump filter and a cooler return filter internal to the transmission. Adding another filter is not necessary and would also cause additional restriction that would reduce cooler flow.

I had not hear that they added one more filter to the 68 RFE transmission. As for AMR using them IIRC they use Fords trucks and or vans and Dodge does not use the same transmission as Ford.

Anyway when you add a inline filter to a Dodge transmission you add extra restriction to the flow of fluid in the transmission and that will cause it to burn up.

The new 68rfe is like the 545rfe (Hemi 5 speed auto) it has 2 filters. One in the sump filter and one filter on the return line from the cooler in the pan. I bet it has 68rfe has 2. I haven't looked at the tranny pan but you can see a rounded edge on one side of the pan hence that is where the filter is.

Spooler, you are right the 68RFE has two filters just like the 45RFE. The oil coming back from the cooler returns through a spin on can filter.

Sounds like there should not be any problems if there is a spin on filter in the system. Just trying to be protective of the new truck that is not even here. Still waiting on the order to arrive.
